Sequoia vs Yukon XL vs Surburban

I'm going to be trading in my t4r soon and I was pretty set on the Sequoia. We had one in the past and were happy with it. The new Canadian SR5 is exactly what we thought we needed.

But yesterday we took our car into the body shop and got the Yukon XL as a rental. It is spacious, similarly priced to the sequoia and it seats 9. We rarely need more 8 because we'll just take another car but it is a nice convenience. As well we installed 2 car seats in the middle row with still ample room for the last seat to fold to get into the 3rd row And by the looks if it, 3 car seats in the 3rd row seems possible. I need to have at least 4 car seats in the car at any given time.

I really like my toyota and we have a bunch in the family.

Sell me on the sequoia. What am I missing about the Yukon/suburban? How is the reliability? The amount of aftermarket parts make it enticing. But I would probably lease it for 3 yrs to test it out. (We have always drove Japanese cars). Why should I disregard the Yukon/suburban as my next car?.

Reliability and build quality. They pale in comparison to Toyota. For me, having the piece of mind that my vehicle is going to work is well worth the shortcomings in this case less room.

Don't get me wrong, I agree. I have 2 T4R so I know what you mean about reliability. but the Yukon xl outfitted the way we would want it would be close to 10k less in Canada. I'm pretty sure the repairs to maintain it for 3-5yrs will not be that much... or will it? does anyone have that has been reliable?

According to gmc/chevy forums, people seem to like them, but like anything, a forum dedicated to a specific truck will be bias.
 
I don't think i've ever met a person with a suburban that didnt like it, i know of a number of them with 200k plus on them, neither are really my thing but i would get the suburban over the sequoia.
 
I know people with suburbans who love them, but they admit they are not reliable. They have 100k miles on them, the new ones, and replaced the engine twice.
 
Replaced the engine twice? That's certainly not something I want to do. I hear parts are cheap but I'd rather not have to do repairs other than regular maintenance.

The question i'd be asking myself would be;

"What am I going to be using this vehicle for 99% of the time?"

Sure there may be that 1 time out of 100 that you need to carry 9 people but is that really going to make up for the other 99% of the time that the Sequoia would be more than sufficient?

Agree. Realistically, the 9th person is rare. But the trunk is much bigger with all 3 rows up. Again, how often will I need to load it up? Probably not often enough to merit a bigger truck. But like I said, it is 10k less expensive.

I think I'm going to take this rental to the local toyota dealership and compare them side by side.

That's a wise idea. Another thing i'd seriously consider is resale value. Toyota was rated #1 in resale value by KBB.

Agree. But I "plan" on driving it into the ground IF there aren't any problems. If I start to develop problems, I'll probably sell it in 4 yrs.

In that case, taking the Chevy sounds like too much of a risk to me. Too many electrical gremlins and reliability issues for my taste.
 
I know lots of people with Yukons, they love them, I've ridden, driven several and like them alot. Had a 2005 Avalanche before the 4runner and loved that one. Sold the Avy at 190000kms, still running great. I don't see any reason not to go for the Yukon. The quality is there, I've owned Ford, Dodge, Chevy trucks and now the Toyota. They were all great running.

This is just my opinion and worth only what you want to give to it.

Thanks for the opinions everyone. After weighing my options I've decided to go with a 2014 Sequoia SR5. It fit the bill, they offered me a decent amount for my trade-in and the reliability is undeniable. It's 2 days old so I really have no feedback on it yet but it is a huge improvement over the 1st gen. It is much more family oriented. There are a lot more cup holders, a mirror to see the read passengers, rear camera with sonar, a lot more compartments for storage in the back and back, more spacious in the third row, all 3 middle seats move independently so we can get into the 3rd now easily, the car seems bigger too.

Thanks. Personally I'm sick of silver after having many silver cars. I much prefer white but the interior is what really makes this car. We drove it all day yesterday and it's really comfy and it works the way I would want it to function.
