The reason it probably worked was because the companies were close in philosophies anyways. Chryco has had a LONG history of ignoring quality. That's NOT going to be easy to change. My brother-in-law is a retired Chryco plant manager. Back in the 80's when Lee Iacocca came in as CEO...he implemented many production changes to make their cars more reliable. It took YEARS to implement those changes. My brother-in-law had to fight with managers, vendors and the Union to implement those changes. It was a nightmare. He was working 70+ hours a week for months at a time.

Why are folks even comparing the JGC to the T4R (especially the TE, from the MotorTrend article)?
The Jeep really is a lot more like the Highlander (or the Mercedes ML-class SUV, that it was developed alongside)-- unibody, car-like suspension, car-like interior, car-like controls, and AWD & otherwise car-like drivetrain.
I don't know...based on my past experience with Jeep unibodies, they're nothing special offroad and kind of rubbish on snow & ice. Maybe that's changed a little, but personal preferences notwithstanding, it's an apples-to-oranges comparison. I wouldn't buy a JGC or MB ML-class to replace my 4Runner for the same reason I wouldn't buy a Highlander to replace my 4Runner, but I might consider an FJ or Wrangler. Of course, those two have more in common with each other than with the 4Runner, but anyway...

I agree with most of the other posters here. I drive my 4runner (and the Tacoma that came before it, that I put almost 300K on) because I don't have to worry about taking it to the shop. I do my regular maintenance and I don't have to worry. And I've seen lots of broken Jeeps. Don't see many broken 4runners!

Oh it's quite alright. This Beretta guy must be one of those types who calls his 4runner a "rig". All big and tough. Hilarious.

BUT! We call things like trucks, ambulances, computers, tractors, ect "rigs" so why not a 4Runner built for off-road? I like it better than calling it a "Suh-vee" :jump:

I like how the suspensions are nearly identical, except the MB uses more shiny aluminum alloys and the Jeep uses stamped steel. Then again, I guess you'd BETTER get some nicer parts for the extra $24k if you go MB, and not just a dressed-up base model with a little more chrome.
But yeah, those are both car-based crossovers. When MB makes a rugged offroad truck, they make a rugged offroad truck-- and that's just not one of 'em.

Oh no Blackworks! I think I just lost all respect I have for you. Bimmers are absolutely phenomenal driving machines.
Are they all super reliable? No. But they are certainly reliable enough and they are amazing cars/trucks.
If you want super reliable and generally boring, Toyota is for you and I love Toyota but BMW's are exceptional vehicles that are in a class by themselves. Yes, they are expensive to buy and fix (so being under warranty is a must) but they have a WOW factor that any Toyota will never have. They target a whole different market and buyer. I can go on and on about BMW since I traded one in to get my 4runner (since I needed the larger truck to fit my kids hockey bags) but I will definitely be in a BMW again one day.
