So i dropped off the old axles and brand new seals and bearings at a local shop. I just called him to check in on the status of the repair and he said there's nothing wrong with the bearings and seals all I had to do was change the inner seals and I would have fixed my problem. I don't know if I buy that because I have two hundred and forty five thousand miles on it and there was an awful lot wobble in the backing plate. I was like dude I just bought all new bearings and seals plus new ABS rings. I want all that changed. he swears if I just change the inner axle seal that I won't have any more leaks. Who's right?

Yeah I told him how the backing plate wobbles around and he says that don't mean anything. What!?!? That is exactly why they are leaking now. From everything thing I have read is that the bearing fails and allows said movement which causes seal failure. He is not the guy doing the work. He just manages the shop.

even with new bearings, the backing plate will wobble. the housing is what hold things in place.

Unfortnately, leaking rear seals are a very common issue. The Toyota techs I talked to about it (which is in agreement on what many say on here) is that you might be ok for a time but more often than not the bearings are also the cause of the issue. If they are and you don't replace them you'll be doing the same exact thing again in a few months or so.

Yeah I just left the shop. The owner himself said what you are saying. He told me that since I had all the parts why not. He wasn't aware I had new abs rings and all the spacers. So hopefully this gets my leak fixed.
I mean it has 245,000. I think it's money well spent.

Yeah, I did it all when mine gave out at 190k miles. Now I never have to worry about that side failing on me ever again. It's just a waiting game until the passenger's side goes out.

good call.
it has also been stated that when a seal fails, the gear oil washes the grease out of the "sealed" bearing, and then it will fail sooner, rather than later.
I suppose if the bearings didn't have 200K+ miles, and you caught the seal early it would probably be fine.

although, I changed a seal on my 85 a couple years ago. pretty sure its still got the OE bearings. it has over 250k on it.. its not my DD though...

I find it pretty amazing that you brought him the parts and he still called you offering to not install them.
What does he expect you to do with the parts you brought him, get a refund?

yes.
its sounds like hes an honest mechanic, that was trying to save the customer some money.
we have had a lot of people bring in parts for repairs that their car didn't need, or that wouldn't fix the problem they were having. it wouldn't be ethical to install them, without at least first contacting the customer to let them know...
The owner has a full on rod shop which builds $100,000 cars and also does body/mechanic repairs. He's very respected and knowledgeable. His manager didn't know I had so many miles on the truck. Truth be told, he has more work than they can handle. The waiting list is 18 months for a hot rod build. The owner thought he was going to have to reuse the abs rings. I opened the box and was like "Ronnie, you have everything right here bud." He had no idea.

My '91 had 270K when I got rid of it; original wheel bearings and seals, front and rear. Never a problem.
Needless to say, our 3rd gens are not the same, or as good, in this one area.

Which is funny to me, because why not? It's the same housing, just a little bit wider and with different suspension mounts.
Has anyone ever measured what it would take to use 1st/2nd gen bearings and seals on a 3rd gen axle?
I'm sure someone here has that kind of time.
