Serpentine Belt Pulleys...

Getting ready to swap out all of the pulleys and get a new serpentine belt for the 4runner's 100,000 mile birthday present.

Question?...for those of you that have done this, are the bolts that holds the pulleys to the block the usual "righty-tighty" "lefty-loosey" type; OR...are one or more the bolts a "backwards thread" design??

Looking at the engine from the front of the vehicle the crankshaft is spinning clockwise. Pulleys spinning clockwise will be right hand thread, pulleys spinning counter clockwise will be left hand thread. So, if the pulley is ribbed it’s right hand and if it’s smooth it’s left hand. The tensioner pulley is often left hand thread.

I haven’t actually done this job on the 5th gen, so hopefully someone else who has can contribute.

SO...sadly the two "upper idlers" both had lateral runout that was obvious when you moved the pulley. Especailly the one on the drivers side.
I will note that these were the stock ones that came on the 2019 4runner I have. I found it curious that neither of the upper idlers had a dust shield on either side of the bearing; just a push in spacer on the back side of the idler.

I replaced these with the Delco Gold brand (Canadian made) idlers from ROCK AUTO. These came with dust covers for both sides and a new grade 10.9 bolt to go with. There is absolutely no runout on either of the new ones and they run a bit quieter as well.
