Set timing on 3.0

I am working on getting the timing adjusted and set in 1992 3.0. I have tried to get it set at 10% but I can not get it to set and stay there before dying. The idle adjusting screw does not seem to speed it up so I can adjust it.
I am adjusting the set screw by the TPS tonhelp speed it up some and hold it there but no where close to 10%

Also I went to drive it and seems to be driving 100% better since I have done a ton of work on it. However, I drive it for 5 min and when I come to a stop and give it gas again it is not as peppy as when I first started it and took off.
So I turn the car off and back on and back to normal until 5 min later.

Any idea on these?

Any failure codes? Like a 52

What is your timing advance at idle? I only adjusted my base timing with the distributor. At Idle i have it set to 12 degrees advanced, my manual says it should be ten and some reading led me to 12. It's a bit snappier down low. My base timing at idle was only advanced 5 degrees once I got it to stop pulsing because the cap/rotor were toast

COMTB —the timing right now at idel is well past the 10degree mark.
It is probably at 40 degrees. If I then it down to 10 degrees it just dies.
I am setting setting it with timing light that has a dial on the back where you can adjust the degree setting. If I leave it zero degree on the gun and check the timing, it is way out out. I should be seeing the mark sowing at 10 degrees but when I try to set it at 10 degrees it just dies.
If I turn the dial to 40 degrees on the gun it show 10 degrees On the pulley.

I also have this set screw by the TPS adjust so that throttle stays open so that the engine does not die.
Where should this set screw be set at?

It is currently ideling at 1100 rpm and when in gear it is down to 800 rpm.

mholme. No not that throttle stop screw. The set screw that is by the TPS on the back side of the throttle body.

Do you have a local toyota dealer or shop you trust?

My local dealer is pretty good if I come in and talk to them and kinda let them know I'm not a complete moron.

I brought mine in to the dealership, had them troubleshoot it and give me a list, they have more diagnostic tools and skill than I do.

Did you install the jumper wire in the diagnostic port between te1 and e1? Check the under hood tag for the idle setting as well, I’m dealing with timing issues on my 3rd gen 3.0 truck right now, just picked it up and trying to get it running. Me and my dad just got done rebuilding a really clean 91 4runner for him though, just about a ful restoration on it.
