The affected Tacoma's and Tundra's were made in the USA, and had frames that were supplied by Dana Corporation. There was a recall because they didn't meet Toyota's specs.
The 4Runner has always been made in Japan, by Toyota.
I have personally seen vehicles from all of the manufacturers, that have rusted severely to the point that they are ready for the junkyard, in less than ten years.
What they all had in common, is that the owners neglected to keep the salt off of them. Either they didn't make the effort to remove the salt on a regular basis, or they didn't personally confirm (or contract with someone to specifically confirm) that their efforts were effective.
Toyota's warranty for rust-through of the sheet metal is 5 years. If a frame were to rust to the point of failure within 5 years, they probably would be willing to replace it.
The bottom line is if you live in an area where accelerated corrosion is an issue, you had better take extra steps to ensure the longevity of your vehicle (any vehicle), or it will rust away sooner than you would like.

My recent 4runner pre-purchase burnt me bad due to no vin check so wasted a whole day off work driving to st louis to buy a perfect 99 limited 4hr drive to get out and look under truck to see horrible rot,pissed me off dealer wouldnt send pictures of frame to me,too busy he said.told him to shove it and returned home,did a auto check on that one and sure enough sold at auction from CHICAGO (salt rot capitol),ended up finding one from louisville KY and had owner send me GOOD frame photos,save yourself the pain and research a purchase of these.As for OP I kinda side with him,have had many 79 f350 4x4 with open "c" channel frames that lived in salt-hell illinois that rotted off only outer layer,still sound,toys and there full box frame and steel type just seem to beg to die in salty areas,sooo jealous of owners from south and west,the super rust free frames are to die for!Also love Illinois for a superb reaction to snow flurries,salt her heavy boys,not everyone has a 4runner that will go every where!!

It does though, I have seen frames that look solid with original paint on some sections and you can effortlessly put a screwdriver through it. IMO the 4runner frames should have the same recall as the taco's do, it just took a little longer for the problems to arise in high numbers.

I think that the frames on the 4Runners aren't as good as some other comparable vehicles. Hell I have a 91 Honda Accord that has been in Indiana its whole life. I never wash it and it has 200k miles on it. The underbody on that car is like new. All of the parts on that car look better than my 4Runner. Also, I do not see how taking your truck to an automatic car wash or even a pay and spray will help with the inside of the frame unless you specifically spray inside the frame rails. I do agree that people should do more preventative maintenance on their vehicles, however, a car manufacturer must realize that 90% of their target audience will not be like people on this forum. They will take their car in for oil changes and check engine lights and thats it.

that's like comparing my 4runner to my space ship, which is made of imaginarium. It's from 2543 and has 34 light years on it, and has no rust! Toyota's should last longer!!

This was mine after 317k miles. I had it welded up and is stronger than it was new.
I can post pics tomorrow if anyone is interested. The rest of the frame, supports and undervody look great. It just the area next to the muffler....

Well seeing this is popping up in more than one thread, whats the preventative solution? Are there good ways to prevent rust on the frames for some of us who do not have it yet? Straight up paint, POR-15, Line X, old school undercoating, what is ideal?
I was also wondering if I do keep my 4runner forever and move back to a place it could rot, other than doing something to the frame, what about the underside of the bodypaint and inside fenders and rockers etc? My paint isnt bad, but has some sun fade on the roof and hood....I saw a nice looking old Yota Taco OD green in town, thing looks cool (to me), although it would make the 4runner look less appealing to most and not as "normal" OD green would be slick to me! haha

Thats the problem, because these rot from the inside out, i am going through the same thing, as i am bringing a completley rust free truck from AZ to NY in a week and have to figure something out, washing it off won't prevent all of it. I think the only real solution is to get the hell out of the rust belt.

I guess I am fine for now....but am considering moving to Colorado or back east somewhere....Id love to keep the 4runner if I do, would be amazing hunting rig and light wheeling rig. Id rather do something now while its here and not rusting, then bring it somewhere and it starts rusting.
