Shifting issues

So I'm all about DIY and saving money....that's why I love this sight. My truck acts like it doesn't want to shift up in the lower gears when taking off. Only when I get after it pretty hard will it shift through semi decent. Otherwise it will lag for a few seconds like it doesn't want to up shift until it finally does. I'm change the fluid and possibly the filter? I'm hoping maybe just something clogging my filter. Any advice much appreciated as always my brothers and sisters.

Is this when its hot or cold? Because when its cold it wont shift the first two gears until 2700 rpms until it warms up or something like that.

Why? Mine (97 SR5, 4wd, 3.4L, ~225 kmiles) is doing the same thing when the engine is cold. But if I let her run for a minute in the driveway till she's warmed up I don't experience the shifting lag. Seems like she's only been doing this for the last 12 months or so.

More important question: is this normal, or a sign of trouble brewing?

This is 100% normal. If it does it all the time then you might have a issue. Cold starts it is normal. For fun make sure your fluid level is correct and clean. Almost all cars do this to some extent. My G8 wont shift into 5th or 6th till tranny temp is high enough. And no TQ lockup.

A complete fluid flush would be best, the OEM filter doesn't really filter much, its more like a screen for the larger chunks so not sure its worth the trouble/expense to change out. Or you can just do several self drain/fills or some one here have done DIY flushes (keep pouring more in to avoid drying out until it comes out Pink & translucent).

Adding a magnefine may help in the long run too: Magnefine 3/8 Inch Magnetic Inline Transmission Filter

But fluid changes alone have helped many with minor shifting issues. Luck!
