The book says you can do it while moving.

Only for a manual transmission with clutch pressed in and moving less than 5mph. If you know what is happening internally with the transfer case range gears, you would be smart to stop. There is no synchro, not dog clutches - just straight gears. Don't risk grinding them.

Stop, neutral, wait for a second, then one quick motion from H->L or L->H.

That usually works for me but sometimes I have to shut my Cummins off in neutral then put it in low and then restart.
