discovered I need a cv axle ( while mounting my winter wheels, already have snow on ground) so with no garage at this time..I called a few shops, two quoted near same labor price but one quoted 563 for the axle and another quoted 270. I told the 573 shop I said that sounds like a toyota price and they are not available at toyota any more. said he would get back to me and did not

But the crazy shop said he could give me a quote but they have found that sometimes on these older 4runners you have to drop the differential out to replace the cv adding 800 to job. Said never heard of that, thanks anyway

I wonder if that is Alaska pricing. Last I looked they were still ~$100 at napa. Too bad they don't fit in a flat rate box...

Hopefully you haven't washed away this past week.

I guess alaska price...just looked and thye are 163 at the local napa
 
They do really hit Alaska and HI with major price increases...:-( Its really a shame. If your CV axles are OEM you can reboot them fairly easily for under 100$ ( well around here they are under 100) for a boot kit for both axles.
I done a few of them its not a horrible job and I just do both boots at the same time. Maybe your lifted and that's not an option. I didn't have the greatest luck with napa axles as their boots material didn't hold up long term for me. So i went back to the OEM axles with just rebooting. Most of mine aren't lifted so that seems to last the longest for me.

We have one that is 2 inch lifted which naturally is a little harder on the boots. But my Brother is like 6 7 so he likes it higher. :-) I think that one is rocking old man emus too.. But the rest of the fleet is normal height.

no not lifted....well factory lifted ( highlander)
 
If OEM axles are undamaged, then reboot those. A/M axles are junk and cause vibration at speeds.

I reboot the axles with OEM boots. Inners were easy if you leave the joint mounted to the diff. Pull the axle out with the tripod, then pull the tripot and old boot. Install the new boot with the clip, add grease then tri pot and slide into the joint housing on the diff, install the clip and done.
 
Agreeing with others here, if you didn't drive them til they failed and ran out of grease and started clicking/clunking, reboot is definately the way to go, find a few videos and grab the special tools if needed (09521-24010 clones on amazon for cheap worked for me on the axles I did, different year Toyota though). If you bent it/damaged it, I've heard good things about Napa axles as others have said. Good luck :)
 
thanks IM gonna to limp this along for a bit, crap timing, heat went out in house and is gonna be spendy ( boiler is 38 years old, water heater went out a month ago) luckily it caused an issue before it gets cold here
 
it really is a quick job if you have a few tools (35mm for the axle nut ((some aftermarket are 42mm I believe)) breaker bar, torque wrench, prybar and snips.) Can buy the napa version (lifetime warranty) to keep you going, reboot OEM and replace when needed. Really only takes 30min a side. Timmy has a good video, as does a guy that goes by funjunkiegarage on youtube (not sure if he's on here) that shows a far simpler and quick method. The latter video really helped me a lot and eased my hesitation to do it myself. Sucks to do it in the snow. I had to do mine in an open asphalt parking lot in 118* heat. Think I would've preferred the cold

Wow, you guys really do re-use things. That's awesome. Hopefully I have enough posts here now to create a new thread....

Another vote to reboot. The kit you get from Toyota has everything you need, including two different kinds of grease for inner/outer. Once I had mine out and clean, the wear surfaces looked like they had 5,000 miles and not the actual 175,000.
