Shopping for an 01' Lift

4runner up front tundra in the back. Marketed for the 4runner but they are tundra part numbers with different bushings. Got them on wheelersoffroad.com
Thanks for the info. I considered using tundra billys with the OME 881 front and 906 rears. But looks like more people are saying go with the Tundra TRD coils up front instead

Yeah I heard the tundra coils are a little more comfortable than the omes. I do like the ride of my 881s though. But the front shocks are on the second perch also. Probably smoother on the bottom one. Which they will probably be on soon. Starting to look like some negative rake

So I've been looking at lift options for the truck I just bought. I think I've decided that the lift springs from OME seem like the way to go for me. I'm leaning towards the 881/890 combination. The truck has 222k on it so I'm thinking I should replace the shocks as well? Or is it possible that I could get away without doing that now and maybe doing it sometime down the road if it becomes necessary? The picture shows how it currently sits on 265/70/16s, any advice is greatly appreciated!
absalom is right about 1/3rd the cost...it can be done even cheaper.

Get some Tundra 5100's from Amazon warehouse for a steal and reuse your existing springs, grab up some 8 wrap land cruiser springs off of craigslist or ebay. get some Monroe shocks for an LC80. purchase 1 extended rear brake line (or 2 depending on year). New top hats and isolators. CHEAP.

Get those LBJ's replaced if your going to do a lift. DONT get anything BUT Toyota LBJs.

Just one tip. loosen and re torque UCAs, and rear control arms at ride height so you don't tear the rubber bushings.

I think I spent maybe $300 on my lift.

Just FYI the Bilstein Tundra 5100 part number 24-188265 (the front strut) is being discontinued and upgraded to a newer part number with minor upgrades.
The new part is 24-261425 that will start shipping mid August.

After speaking with Bilstein themselves I was told the new part does include upgrades and better internal engineering but nothing too dramatic

Are the top hats and isolaters I need made for a Tundra or the 4Runner?

Yeah it's that cheap if buy used worn out suspension.

Not entirely true. The only used part I have is the land cruiser 8 wraps, they don't feel worn out at all.

Way better option for noobs thinking a spacer lift or the rough country stuff is their only option due to price.

Most people that do the tundra/lc lift buy used front shocks and coils and rear springs as well. Even some cheap out on getting used rear LC shocks. Most used toyota's have pretty worn down suspension. Using these parts will not give the best ride.

1/3rd the price of the SS 1.2 kit would be $435. Pretty hard to build your own 1.2 kit at that price. Especially with it including the extras that are pretty much needed even if you think they are not. Stuff like lowered bump stops, rear panhard bar, driveshaft zerk, sway bar bracket relocation, extended brake line, e brake relocation.

I know because I pieced mine together. Bought everything new and it was no where near $435. Even buying parts used I dont see you hitting that price point.

It sounds like I'll have to make my own decision haha. I can't imagine the OME setup could be THAT stuff but by the sounds of it I must be wrong. I'll have to look into other options, the Tundra/LC combo doesn't seem like a bad combo it just might be a pain to track the parts down

This is the way to go. Wait & save your money. Ask for cash on your B-Day & Christmas...LOL Do it once & do it right.

Yeah, the only problem is that the truck needs tires sooner rather than later. It just passed inspection but the tires are pretty worn and dry rotted so I'd like to have them replaced but I don't want to have to buy new tires now and then buy tires again when I get the lift together

Look for decent ones on CL, to hold you over.
My old tires were shot & I bought new General Grabber RTS's for $400 from Discount Tire Direct to hold me over. I knew I was gonna do a lift in about a year.
I know highway tires aren't sexy but they're cheap. I have these in my yard with about 5000 miles on them... I should sell them!

They still got me down easy trails because of the new meat. (from 2 years ago)

I'll take the challenge!

Front TRD coils - $90/ pair shipped from car-part.com
Front Bilstein Tundra 5100 shocks - $110 /each from Amazon, brand new

LC coils - ~$75/ pair from Craigslist, Ih8mud, or car-part.com
LC Shocks - $19/ each from O'reillys or Napa

Rear panhard bar - $145 from Front Range Offroad, or BYO for $90
Trailblazer bumpstops - ~$10 from local junkyard

Grand total = $578

That's for brand new shocks on all corners. I don't really care about coil age as new LC coils add WAY too much rake, IMO. Add another $200 for mandatory LBJ's unless they've been changed within 80k miles. Add another $100 for the superior (again, IMO) Superflexes. In the end, 2.5 times cheaper than the SS 1.2 kit. I've never had an issue with brake line stretching, but that's probably because I run only 7 or 8 wraps.

If it were me, and I was deadset on the SS 1.2 kit, and spending what he charges for the SS 1.2, I'd opt for the following:

-Front coilovers
-Rear shocks
-Rear coils
-http://frontrangeoffroadfab.com/4runner-panhard-link-3rd-gen-rear/

Grand total = $2,132

Yes, it's a bit more money than the SS 1.2 kit, but offers a huge increase in offroad capability, as well as ride quality. Not to mention, keeps your CoG lower for increased stability off camber. Additionally, any concerns of used parts are a non-issue as it's all brand new. It's basically what I hope to run on this next build.

IMO for around $1000 that I build my suspension it will ride and work 100 times better than those crap part store parts and hang with $2200+ kits. My brother's 4th gen with full metal4x4 icon kit gets out performed by my rig. NTM mine rides like OEM. Winch helped soften my 881s. I was not impressed at all with king or icon setups.

We'll wheel soon once I finish this build and compare penis length and ride quality of the OME/Tokico vs Kings. Will be fun. What part of co?

I'm in the springs. I will admit his at high speed off-road destroys my setup. But I never drive like that.
