Shorted battery...now no start...

i would think after the short, some sensor might have been destroyed and became intermittent. check if you have fuel pressure or spark. check the crank position sensor too and try to get an error code.

Sometimes it will start. Other times it just cranks over and over and doesn't start. I'll check again but there are no lose wires anywhere.

Something's loose if it starts sometimes. Check your alternator and starter cables/connectors as well. Make sure all the plugs are in tight.

have you clean your throttle body?
that can cause some problems. you might have shorted something too. also check all the fuses. literally pull each one out and inspect.

Here's the thing. Vehicle worked fine....even perfect. I accidentally short the positive battery terminal to the chassis, and it instantly starts having this problem.

So it's not the throttle body, it's not a bad battery, there are no loose cables, there are no shorts, all fuses (internall & external) are good, no codes, everything else (electrical wise) works fine.

Just now I was able to get it started...barely. This time I decided to drive it. I noticed that it was gutless along the entire power band so I kept driving. Little by little it got stronger, soon it felt more like normal. Shut it down, and it started right up again. Tried this a few times, started right up. Waited 20 min, started right up again.

I'm not 100% in the clear yet but my theory is that when I grounded the positive terminal, I completely wiped out all the ECU's learnt data. So it has to re-learn everything from scratch.

I have a OBDI-based vehicle that I can hook up to my laptop and manually clear it's RAM. Once a new program is loaded, it takes a bit of driving for the ECU to learn and adapt.

Thoughts? I'll go test it again in an hour or so.

Definitely has to relearn idle and whatnot, but that shouldn't stop it from starting.

remember we all have electronic throttle body. i had the same thing happen on a camry, disconnected the battery for a few mins to do a big 3, then the car stalls, and idle rough. decided to clean out the throttle body and it was all dirty, also cleaned the maf too. now the car starts fine and idles fine again.
simple maintenance can do alot of things.

I've cleaned the throttle body and checked the MAF at regular intervals.

As I suspected, this morning it started right up. It's looking more like the ECU had to relearn everything. Crossing fingers it continues to start up today.

It’s working fine now. Seems I was right about the ECU relearning everything.
