Should I? 13WL 231MM used?

Talking with a auto salvage yard in my area he has a set of Calipers from an 05 Tundra 4x4 V8 with 87k on them for 110.00 a pair and a second set that has 210k for 90.00. Ive read the sticky thread but maybe I missed something, He claims there are only one set of calipers for the 05 tundra (231mm). What vehicle are the 199mm off of? I just want to make sure im getting the right ones. Found some on amazon rebuilt for 90 each from raybestos... Im thinking ill go with the used 87k set

Any 04-06 will have the 231mm, so you should be good with the 05 ones. $110 isn't a bad price at all and sometimes the pads are fine that comes with them, so you could just need rotors.
 
Hell yeah- that's an awesome price. I've got to get some 13WL's for my '01 and they're $82 each (re-manned from NAPA). The 199's are the 13WE cast and in my opinion they are not worth it at all. They're the exact same size as the 4Runner calipers (other than a slightly larger cavity to accommodate the larger rotors). I use the Brembo Tundra rotors from amazon. They're $50/$60 ea.
 
Just got my 13WL's put on this past weekend. After 235k miles, night and day difference. Absolutely love em. I paid $80 for the pair from a 2005 tundra with 63k miles on it. They also charged me a core charge of $15/ea. I'll be taking in my runners calipers to get that back. Anyone else need a reason to work on their brakes, go with 13WL.
 
I have the 231's off a V8 Sequoia on my truck and I absolutely love them. Especially when I was living out in CO and going up and down those mountain passes. HUGE difference. I will say this, I'm using cheap Autozone rotors and they are fine, but the pads suck. Next time I will be getting different pads. I paid $132 for mine w/ tax.
 
Amazon calipers

Amazon has 20% off raybestos products right now. I just ordered both calipers "loaded" ...came with all mounting hardware and pads for $165. Not bad for something rebuilt with a warranty.

Believe the part #s were rc11550 & rc11549
 
You can get new calipers at Autozone for $77 each, but order online and get 20% off orders over $100. After the discount, those would be about $123 for the pair, before taxes. There is a core charge but you just take back your old calipers and they will refund the core, no problem.

I disagree that the 199's aren't worth it. The major benefit of the brake upgrade is the beefier rotors, IMO. I would have bought the 231's but they aren't compatible with my stock split/3-spoke rims. I wasn't interested in grinding my rims or having to get new rims. In my situation, the 199's are totally worth it.

I'm totally with ya, man. I had to get spacers for my '96 to accommodate the 13WL's. I understand the situation/cost regarding rims, I just personally think if it's upgrading I'm going all the way. That's just my opinion. You are getting the beefier rotors with the 13WE set up and will save money not having to replace them often, but you're not getting a larger pad contact surface. Again, just my personal thoughts -
 
I ended up getting new (rebuilt) 13WL's from Advance auto for about $108 for the pair. I figured the castings were probably OEM anyway, and the rebuild kit is probably ok not being OEM. They have been great for the last 2 years.

Towards the end of the thread I posted the final Autozone parts I ended up using.

I would also consider the Raybestos stuff from Amazon, assuming they are in-stock for shipment, and the final price is better than Autozone.

If your rims can accommodate the 231mm calipers/pads, I would go for that. Unfortunately, my rims would not so I went 199mm but I am happy with the results.
 
Stupid question and I know it's out there somewhere but I couldn't find it through search. BUT does the 01-02 16" wheels alloy for the 231?
 
I've finally been working on this myself. I snagged some 13WL 231mm calipers off a junk yard Sequoia that were in really good shape. Paid $70 for the pair.

I cleaned them up with a die grinder and some different size wire wheels, then rebuilt them with a Toyota Caliper rebuild kit. I've got the P/Ns and all that at home of someone needs. Very simple process but you're gonna need compressed air to get the pistons out.

I plan to go with some Power Slot rotors and probably Hawk Ceramic brake pads unless you guys have another suggestion on the pads?

I shoot how to videos and put them up on my website Speedy's Garage and will have video of how to clean up and rebuild the calipers posted before long.
 
Anyone know where to find these decals? I've have looked everywhere and may end up just having some made by my local shop.

Well, I found the answer. The reason it's so hard to find a decal like I posted above is because they are very hard to make. The cursive script gives the vinyl plotter fits. My local decal shop, however, WAS able to make me a few. They are die cut vinyl in white and are just a tick over 4" long and 3/8" tall which will fit the rib of the caliper perfectly.

I got a few extra if anyone needs a couple. $5 per decal and PM me your shipping address.

They said they have another option that is not die cut vinyl that is much easier to make. It's a clear decal with white writing on it. I can have them make up a few of those as well if folks need them. Will be much cheaper at about $2 per decal since they're way easier to make.

I'll post up pics of mine once painted and the decals are on.
 
Finished prepping my junk yard $35 calipers. Rebuilt them as discussed with a Toyota rebuild kit, smoothed them out with a die grinder and dremel, then painted.
