Should I Do It? SR5P for TRD OP?

I’ve currently got a 2015 SR5P - 31K miles, 4x2. I have the opportunity to get a 2018 TRD Off Road Premium for a stellar price, at least I think - $39,400 out the door. Would you do it?

I know I want 4x4 - biggest regret with the first purchase. I don’t plan on putting a lift on it but do plan for some basic off-roading nearby. I don’t know why, but I feel like the TRD OPs sit higher up than I do, even with the bigger 275 BFG KO2 I have. Not sure if it’s because the TRDs have a different suspension, because I’m only a 4x2, etc?

I keep going back and forth on if it’s worth getting the TRD. Any input?

Weigh your expense to happiness ratio if the rest of your life is sorted. Are you single, married, family? Sometimes, if you can buy it with money, it turns-out to be cheap. I don't think anyone who doesn't know you can give you actionable advice on huge purchases like this but good luck!

I paid $39,260 for mine (no KDSS, only add-ons are the all weather mats and cross-bars) after Title, Taxes, and Fees and thought I got a great deal so I think you're good on that side. Only worry I'd have is what you're going to lose on the '15, three years isn't a long time to get ahead of the interest. Have they already given you an offer on the trade?

That said, I've driven 4x2 trucks, so I feel you there. I would never ever buy another one, and don't understand how they're even still being produced.

Yeah, not sure why we got a 4x2, makes no sense even now. I was fortunate enough to buy the 15 outright so I’m okay as far as payments or being behind on any interest/principal.

I think I’ve mentally made the call, but just trying to gauge if it’s a smart decision. You’re all right so far - only I can make the call. This sucks. Lol

Its an easy call for me, but I guess it would come down to are you ever planning on taking it off road? If the answer is yes, get the 4x4. I don't think $39,400 is a stellar price, I would work on that with the dealership.

That's a good price if it's a TRDORP with the blackout package, if it's just a standard TRDORP then there's definitely some room there to do more. Go see the guys at Charles Maund there in Austin, they took good care of me a month ago and they have some of the best pricing in the area.

Seeing how you already have the TRD Pro wheels and some recently new 275 KO2's, I would work it out to where the wheels/tires on the new T4R go on your 2015 trade-in and you swap over your current wheels/tires to the 2018. That alone should help your trade value slightly and allow you to keep your already paid for and superior/better looking wheels/tires.

Good luck with your decision, but I think you already know your answer. Be sure to post up some pics when you bring her home.

You said you wanted to do some offroading. Pretty much need 4WD for that plus you said that you wanted 4wd and regretted not getting on in the first place. You said it is a TRD OR Premium, so that means that the price is pretty good, especially if it has KDSS and sunroof.

All this being said, you are probably going to be more satisfied with the TRD. I know I would not have been happy with anything less.

Appreciate the input, fellas. The two TRD OP I was looking at do have the moonroof but neither appear to have KDSS, at least based on the VIN- I haven't looked at them in person, heading to the dealership this morning to take a look.

I'm going to see if they'll let me keep my new tires, as suggested, and try to get the price lower for the TRD OP. I'm looking over the other T4R.org thread on 'how much are people paying for the NEW 4Runner' - hopefully I can get a good idea as to how much I should try to pay for the new rig.

I paid in Feb this year $36,000 on the road for a TRD OR no KDSS on a MSRP of $39,078 with “winter package”: carpet and rubber mats.
As for the wheels/tires, tell them to swap it as part of the deal. It’s a 10min job for service dept. If they don’t want it, walk away. They will come after you to do it.

I made the same mistake/ choice when I purchased my 2014 SR5 with the exception of it being 4x4. I would definitely get the TRD OP if I could go back (Trail in 2014).

I agree, I got my SR5P4x4 last year. I might've ended up getting a TRD Off Road if I had thought about it at the time, but I probably wouldn't trade my SR5P4x4 to get a new TRD Off Road now. I'd lose too much money trading in, or selling on top of what I already put into the SR5P4x4 to start over with a TRD Off Road. I'd be just as happy if I could find someone to trade hoods with me, and sell me TRD headrests. Haha

Well, you don't need the OR package.

I think this should be a decision of whether or not you should buy a 4x4 SR5.

Currently, you could buy an ARB air locker for the rear. That will get you out of a lot. There are no gear ratio changes across the trim levels, so you don't need to worry about that while adding larger tires. Speaking of tires, throw a set of quality ATs on there and you'll be able to do so much more with a 4x2. Plus you can buy a hidden winch mount for the front, along with a winch and have that as piece of mind. You do put a bit more strain on the drivetrain while offroading in 2wd, but it is a bit more fun as it requires a different skill set.


If you plan on going through mud, get the 4x4.

If you are just looking for 4wd and do not want KDSS, a locking rear and some cosmetic badging, the SR5 would be a viable option and would save you some $$$ to put toward a lift, bumper and winch if you felt the urge.:lmao:

I would have gone that way, but I wanted the KDSS, locking rear, and I like the 4wd shifter to be a lever not a switch. Badging was just icing.

Another consideration would be that the TRD is probably going to be worth more down the road, as it is worth more now.
