Should I go 285/16 or 255/16...... help

Can’t decide but need to soon, wheels are on there way.

Ride - 07 Sport 2wd
Suspension - 17 4runner TRD pro with 2 inch toy Tec lift
Rims - Scs F5’s 16x8 3.5 backspace

I’m choosing between 285/75/16’s or 255/85/16’s. I’m 90% LA City/highway driving and 10% basic off road, nothing crazy. I know I’m going to lose some MPG’s but trying to retain as much as possible. I’ve read the 255’s are perfect for that but seem to only come in Mud Terrians if I want them light, BFG KM2’s. Anybody running 255/85/16’s with pics would be much appreciated. I’ve been looking for days now. Also, 285/75/16 pics would be great. Which one would provide a better ride and noise? All your opinions will help a ton.

255's should net you better mpg in both city and highway driving situations because they are usually lighter and usually have less rolling resistance. They also fit with less trimming because they are narrower. You will already most likely have to trim quite a bit because of the 3.5" backspacing of the wheels.

I would check out the ST Maxx if you want a 255/85/16. They're not super heavy, and are very quiet. I'm running them in the 255/80/17 size on my 4th gen and they've been great. I'm running them on 5th gen trail edition wheels with no spacers, only had to trim a hair off the lower front bumper and push the wheel well liners forward.

I concur, the Cooper ST MAXX are amazing in the 255/80/17...Awesome in snow, ice, rain, and dry pavement routing! I only needed to heat-up the inner fender wells some and push them back to make them not rub much...I will be repeating the same tire and size when I need new ones...

I’m running a 285/65r18 which is just .2 less in diameter than what a 285/75r16 would give you, so here’s relatively what it’d look like.

Between the two I prefer a 255.

I am currently running a 255/75/17 (32.1” C Load) on an FJ rim because I found a really good deal on used tires. I would have preferred to stay with my OEM 16” rim just to maintain more sidewall but that’s how it ended up and I don’t have any issues. No rubbing full lock to full lock.

It’s been great so far even with the factory gearing. Most of my driving is off-road, and any on-road would be to get to an off-road destination.

If I was to get an AT for road use, I would probably consider going back to the OEM size of a 265 since there is a lot more selection to be had on a 16” rim vs going to either extreme of a 255 or 285.

I’m leaning towards Cooper Discoverer S/T’s in a 255/85/16. I like the S/T Maxx more but the S/T’s are 48 pounds compared to 59 pounds in the Maxx’s. I also think for what I’ll be using my runner for the 255 will be more efficient and for the look I want over the 285’s, as well as less trimming. I think I can live with the skinny. I wish somebody had these tires that could post some angle shots. Anyways, still up for ideas or suggestions.

I put a the Cooper Discoverer A/T on my Silverado and I really like it... I picked that tire because I its primary my road truck, but it goes get out to a camp site using some fire roads once in a while.

So far so good... no complaints, drives nice, not noisy.

I ran 255/85/16 KM2s for a stint, but if you aren't actually wheeling running a MT would be a waste. They aren't terribly loud, but they do make some noise. I'd go Coopers if you're mostly street with some fire road action. Just watch the rocks in the dirt, I had a buddy blow a sidewall out after taking a hard hit on a rock. I hit the same rock with my KM2 and it didn't phase it.

If you're going cooper you might as well wait a few weeks for the new AT3 XLT tires to come in stock at the mainstream tire shops

I had the 255/70/17's installed. I'm not a fan of tall skinny's and the MT's were very noisy on pavement. I switched out to 285/70/17's KO2's and I love them. Yes my MPG went down.

Even after getting the Cooper Discoverers S/T’s in a 255/85/16’s at cost, there $205 a tire. I really want them given they’re only 48 pounds a tire...... much lighter than others. However, I found these Pirelli Scorpion MTR 285/75R16 and they’re 52 pounds. Anybody have any reviews on these? Noise? Quality? Need to buy tires in the next two days. Thanks for your input!

Never had it on stock tires. I couldn't tell ya.
