Should I touch-up paint my frame?

I took my Budbuilt sliders off to get them cleaned up. I had them sand blasted and went the Line-X route. They look amazing, and the Line-X texture will be nice to have on the bars too since I don't have the tread plate.

I am going to bolt them back on tomorrow. Question is: before I bolt them back on, should I bother hitting the frame with some rattle can first? Or is that a waste of time? I am in Michigan, if that matters.

IMO rattle can black is pretty much a waste of time, especially in the rust belt.

Find yourself some Mar-Hyde 4311. Best stuff I have ever found.

Just don't get it anywhere you don't want it. ;-)

Added bonus: If you have a shitty looking black mailbox take it off and spray it with this also. Mine is going on 3 years of sun, snow, freeze, thaw and still looks great.

It is good stuff and way better than black shake and shoot.

Just make sure everything is power wash clean before you spray, you don't want to envelope a bunch of mud and dirt under it.

Edit: Forgot to detail why I asked if you have rust. If so, you'll want to address that before you proceed with the Mar-Hyde.

Paint frame? Yeaaa......../

In spring of '15 I acquired a 2010 limited exposed to five years of central & northern Ohio winter driving. Top side is in great shape but underside had some areas of rust forming . For about fifteen years I've been using POR-15 on corroded surfaces or just painting items where I want a permanent coating , it pretty awesome stuff. Last year did most of the rear frame, axle, links, etc. and the front skid plate on the Runner in gloss black. Rear swaybar links were in pretty bad shape so pulled them and coated in grey. Have a little spare time on my hands lately so last week pulled the wheels and did a little detailing, coated calipers with silver ( good to about 450*) and got areas of rear that I missed and front items I wanted to get coated. Will probably touch up a few more areas next week. Search POR-15.com , it's pretty wicked stuff , kind of expensive but if you want to do it once and be done.......

How bad would you say it rusted in 5 years? I have a new TRD Pro and am VERY concerned having read all about the Toyota rust / frame issues. Its a very expensive truck and looks great but terribly concerning to hear about rust after 5 years. I know its totally different, but I had a jeep wrangler that had to be junked after 11 years because the frame was rotted / rusted away. Should not be happening on new / modern vehicles

I bought my 2011 Trail CPO from PA and it had more surface rust on the frame than my 1992 land cruiser has. Agree that it is crazy how these new frames and rusting to shit. Having said that... I painted all the rust and I apply fluid film to everything underneath before every winter (In the NYC now). That POR looks amazing, not sure if I can keep my truck that clean though.

you do not need to clean or sand or anything before using the POR-15 3 step process. it is easier than you think i promise. If you read about POR-15 the manufacturer says it works BETTER if you dont try to remove, sand, or buff out rust before you start the process.

I did it recently to the padeye holes in my linexd bumper, needed more clearance, removed the linex and then hit the bare metal with POR-15. It is simple. And i am about to do my receiver and my recovery block that goes into my receiver. Its not that hard.

Get the starter kit off amazon i thin its $20-30 IIRC and it covers A LOT from what i have read and from my own small experience i had a LOT leftover for other projects.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Here's a few pics of my frame. There's just some surface rust from where the sliders were bolted on. You can see where the sliders were attached to the frame.

Sounds like I should hit this with some POR-15 then. My thought was to address this now so that I can leave the sliders on for the long haul.

I use POR-15 too. Amazing stuff. They're serious about the gloves. Nothing removes this stuff.

I just touch up the underside in the spring, and a bit of fluid film touchup in the fall. Looks gorgeous underneath.

I just ordered a small can of POR-15 to touch up my body mounts from the BMC. That stuff is awesome.

Im in the snowbelt as well but I coated my frame when I bought the truck and after 2 winters not a spec of surface rust yet
