haha, yep it was wrapped at UROTC. Like I said, it's hard to notice unless you're inside. The matte black would be more noticeable I think.

How cautious do you have to be waxing around this vinyl?

I just did the scoop insert. No, this does not cut down on glare whatsoever (I have sunglasses for that)...but I think it looks awesome, particularly against the white TRDP scheme.

I removed the insert from the hood (easy money) and stripped it down/taped off. My first attempt was with Plasti-Dip, yielding dismal results. I prepped properly and applied numerous (very) light coats at the recommended distance, but ended up with texture comparable to spray-in bed liner which I'm assuming has to do with the Houston head/humidity. So, I peeled it off (which took quite a while) and shot it with some Satin Black PPG in my buddy's booth. I know, this is permanent (all you vinyl guys)....Good thing it came out flawless.

I did it for the anti-glare benefits. But I think I'm going to have to spray the front of the scoop black.

Anybody SR5 owners out there got vinyl on their hood? Just curious if anyone else has taken this 'look' to their hood even though there isn't a scoop.

Yup right in there looks the same as mine, just curious if they had better luck. I used a heat gun and worked it for a bit. That area was the hardest part of the install.

I had my entire hood professionally wrapped and they did it exactly the same way. If you get up close you can see the two pieces in each corner of the scoop, but otherwise it is not noticeable. If I didn't have the scoop I would have done it myself.

It is one of the best mods I've done to the truck. I can't believe I waited so long to do it.

To make the template I used masking tape, basically lay it on the hood and sketch the lines. It can be messy and doesn't have to match side to side. Somewhere in the mess will be the "right" line... Peal the tape off the truck and stick it on something, like an old poster.... cut out the basic shape and find the middle of the scoop. now fold that in half over on its self and cut the "best" line you have to make the pattern mirror both sides.



Use the pattern to cut the vinyl.



I've thought about scanning the pattern into auto cad and then getting them cut on a plotter... Wasn't sure if the cost would equal the demand tho.

SO, never vinyl wrapped anything. Is this a better option that the clear crap they want to sell you for many many hundreds from the dealer that is pimped as bumper and hood protection? Taking this off 5-10 years down the road, is the factory clear then hammered?

I ask because the 3M clear stuff is retarded expensive and later turns into a cracked and cruddy looking mess that later proves to be a huge PITA to get off. I don't dig any of the plastic hood deflectors either, but would appreciate the chip coverage of some type..

It is way cheaper than a new hood. I have a full hood wrap and have had mine just 3 months shy of 4 years on an outside truck and apart from where it has been struck with debris it looks fine, no cracking or peeling. I do protect it with a sealant every 6 months or so. It has actually lasted longer than I expected it too. I figure I will replace it not this summer, maybe next unless I feel it isn't holding up well enough.

I would take any matte finish 3m wrap over the clear any day. I have the clear on the bumper cover and fenders, while still holding up "ok", the jacks that applied it at the dealer used a bit to much heat on some of the compound edges and it is a tad bit brittle.

Thank you for the insight on the hood wraps. I'm going to have to give this a try when things warm up outside.
Just thought I would chime in and say that the installer I used for my 3m clear bra/ whole front end advised me to have it all removed after 7 years. He said that there warrantied not to crack for 7 years, but after that time frame (maybe 8-9 years) it will crack and removing it would be like pulling small slivers of plastic.
If I get 7 years out of mine, I'm happy.
