show me your vinyl wrapped hood scoops

Great thread. Thinking about doing my hood scoop... One, for the damn glare (even with sunglasses, sometimes it royally sucks)... And two, just to add a hint more customization to the front end. I know it sounds weird, but I’m pondering doing a matte silver or grey that comes close to matching the front & back TE valences. That way, the accent pieces all “flow” against the black on my TE. Never even thought about doing this before today, so will ponder on it for a bit.

Definitely should do it, the glare disappears all together, and it looks great. Mine's still holding up great 8 months later too.

The glare was awful from my scoop, but its a Mag Grey with "sparkles" in the paint as my wife says. I think its probably worse with any of the metallic paints

It has most affected me when the sun is at lower angles like morning and night, or when it is almost directly overhead and a little behind you. I don't think it is a metallic paint problem specifically, although the flakes may exacerbate the issue.

Regardless, I am dork, I still like the fake hood scoop better than a smoothy :biggrin1:

I guess I could share. Just used knifeless tape and 3M matte black. Easy and no glare.

I think it may be affected by how you sit in the driver seat also with your seat set up. Just a theory. some people say they've never seen it, I know I see a lot, especially driving west in the late afternoon. Like I do, home from work, every day.

Thinking about half hood but full length

Didn't see any pics posted here - looking for anyone who has wrapped the full length of the center of the hood including the scoop (I have a trail). I would lay matte black between the ridges of the hood. I saw one pic that only went as far as the scoop. Thoughts?

For those DIY'ers, did you remove the hood to get a better vantage on your work? I haven't reviewed how difficult it would be to gauge if it would be work the work, but it seems it would aid in getting good job.

I just did the scoop insert. No, this does not cut down on glare whatsoever (I have sunglasses for that)...but I think it looks awesome, particularly against the white TRDP scheme.

I removed the insert from the hood (easy money) and stripped it down/taped off. My first attempt was with Plasti-Dip, yielding dismal results. I prepped properly and applied numerous (very) light coats at the recommended distance, but ended up with texture comparable to spray-in bed liner which I'm assuming has to do with the Houston head/humidity. So, I peeled it off (which took quite a while) and shot it with some Satin Black PPG in my buddy's booth. I know, this is permanent (all you vinyl guys)....Good thing it came out flawless.

Looks good. In person, how closely does it match the Toyota front grill and front valence piece?

I was literally thinking the same thing for my mag gray TE. A silver that matches the bumper color would looks awesome. Let me know if you find anything.

Had mine wrapped and windows tinted a few weeks ago. Kinda wish I had just had it painted so I could go through car washes.

Who said you can’t go through car washes? I wrapped my entire FJ and went through car washes with no issues for 2 years. Then I peeled it off and traded it in.

Were you safe on pressure washes, brush washes, and touchless?

Yea. The only way the wrap is coming off with a pressure washer is if it was already lifting or if you were purposely trying to do it by getting right on it and aiming right at the edge of the sticker.

I did it for the anti-glare benefits. But I think I'm going to have to spray the front of the scoop black.

That looks sweet on the Quicksand. I have magnetic grey. Thinking of a Satin silver metallic to make it pop but still be subtle
