I realized that this is incorrect, my first "4WD" was a 1987 Toyota Tercel Wagon - "4WD"... like this one. Man I loved that thing... it was a great camper and ski bum hauler for a kid in high school... until the bottom rusted off and you had to run it with the heat on full in the summer to keep it from overheating on the highway.

First 4x4 was a 1984 Ford Bronco II purchased new. Looked like this one, minus the roof rack:
First wife ended up with it after the divorce. By then, I was driving an '87 Wrangler, and I'd already owned and sold an '86 Chevy diesel 4x4. Replaced the Jeep with a full-sized 1990 Bronco. Only one I ever saw with a 5-speed stick. That one was totaled in a wreck, and then a few years later I acquired a hand-me-down '97 Ranger 4x4 pickup, which I still own. And now I've had the 2010 T4R Limited to a whole week.

Mine was a Subaru brat... it was a ton of fun... till I burnt it up... popped a hole in the oil pan.. engine seized before I noticed...sold it for 100 dollars...wish I still had it now

This one wasn't mine, but it's the closest I could find.
Don't have a picture because I owned it for less than a year.
And wouldn't you know it, it didn't snow that Winter....
so I never got to use the 4WD.
Couldn't keep it, because I was young and couldn't afford to fix all of the
typical problems with old Wagoneers. (rust, back window issues, gas mileage)

Here's a fuzzy picture of my first - a 1988 Chevy S-10 Blazer, taken shortly after I bought it new. What sold me on it was that Chevy had just started putting in the 4.3 liter V-6, making it the quickest of the small SUV's at the time (the old 2.8 models were slugs). I sold it in 1995 at 130,000 miles; the buyer put another 120,000 miles on it before it died. It was a bucket of rattles, but it was relatively trouble-free, and very easy to work on.
That was mine too except mine was a piece of crap my day bought for $700. Then drove it twice and then decided he didn't need it. Dropped the keys and title off with my wife while I was at work. My wife was PISSED I drove it for about 2 years until the transmission went out then sold it for $200. It was great in the snow and and the hills on our land, but dry pavement on a sunny day over 60 mph you had issues.

Neat! My first truck (not a 4x4) was a white strippo 1974 Ford F100 that I bought in 1980 with 40,000 miles on it. Looked just like the one in the picture (other than the 4x4 part). It had the 360 (with an oil bath air cleaner that was a real PITA to clean). No power steering, no power brakes, and of course, no A/C. Had a ball in that truck.
Took it off road a lot, and also used it in my daily commute into downtown Denver. Maneuvering it in tight places could get to be quite a workout, but I was much younger then. Likewise, I don't have any pictures of it.

My first technical 4x4 is my current 01 T4R SR5 SE. I love it more everyday. My wallet cannot keep up with my mind in terms of what to do to the runner.
I did own an 02 Subaru Outback LL Bean edition with the H6 3.0L. The symmetrical AWD in that vehicle saved my ars in the snow more than once. I bought it with 50K miles, drove it myself til over 200K, then sold it to my brother. It is still on the road, approaching 300K, and recently completed our summer vacation to Myrtle Beach, SC (about an 8-9 hour drive from where we live).
