With the right size fasteners, you can put the Shrockworks gas tank skid on there with a bit more clearance by putting the carriage bolts on opposite their directions:

I still haven't flexed it enough to really know if I still have clearance issues though.

The only fitment issue I had was the hole that mounts on the frame side of the gas tank skid - I re-drilled it to fit better on my truck.

When I first installed I had the bolts facing opposite of your picture. It tore the bolts to shreds, then I flipped the bolts and it still rubbed on the actual skid plate. Both the original one and the "redesigned one".

Just a heads up, but I did still manage to crack my radiator with the RCI aluminum plate in place . In all fairness it was a very ( VERY ! ) hard hit that was due to my own inattentiveness and need to relieve myself .:wow: And instead of completely smashing the radiator and being stuck ,it was just a small crack that let me get home 2 hours away. I would still recommend RCI .

Nothing wrong with BudBuilt

According to their current site, the front skid is a 65# in 3/16 steel one-piece pan for $289 PLUS shipping

The only other pan seems to be a 60# belly pan for $264 plus shipping

Both are available in light 1/8" steel aluminum and the steel pans need to be painted

$266 plus $64 shipping for the front skid, or the complete drivetrain kit (front plus trans) for $390 plus $92 shipping and needs to be painted

I would steer away from aluminum skid plates. They are typically one and done.

I am leaning towards/interested in the Shrockworks skids (Radiator, engine and Transmission) because of how the front radiator skid mounts - it uses the tow-hook mounts on the frame rails and not the front cross member like all others. In my limited opinion this design protects the radiator more by giving it more space. The other thing attractive about this is that it comes powder coated and ships free, $580 to my office

RCI is interesting because the same radiator/engine/transmission combo, also powder coated is only $502 shipped to my office, but mounts on the front cross member like everyone else's pans.

I will wait to see what the RCI group buy pricing looks like before going further with this, but like [MENTION=7105]Scramble[/MENTION] has said to be before, the factory skids might be just fine for a sissy 2WD, and he knows all about being a sissy, so I should probably listen

LOL, Sissy Mary! It all depends on what kind of trails you run. I'm not a rock crawler so I've gotten away with the stock skids. I do have a 3/16" Stainless engine skid that I got as a custom order when that guy on TC world was making them. I liked the idea of no rust & no painting. I bought sliders & once they're painted & welded on I'll be taking on harder trails so then I'll evaluate my skid situation. There was no way I was gonna risk bashing my rocker panels. I just believe in putting the money where it belongs. No sense in all of that added weight & money spent if you dont need them.

For once I agree with Nancy Boy here and ordered me DOM sliders sliders today. I've not yet hit anything hard enough to do more than scratch the factory skids (bottom engine covers) but dat plastic radiator doe

Bending on a hard impact is understandable... I'm more concerned about the corner of the radiator sticking out to the side of the skid plate!
