got a free 3.0 with 240k. would the switch be hard to do?:crazy:

If you're going to do a motor swap, the 3.0 would not be the smart choice... even if you got the engine for free. The hassle of the wiring, transmission, mounting, etc. isn't worth the extra little bit of power the 3.0 will give you. I wouldn't swap in anything less than the 3.4. Just my opinion.
To answer your question, it's just my opinion but if you have to ask if the swap would be hard then you need to do some homework to see what is involved. Take a look at the toyota engine swap section on yotatech. But you'll have to find a wire harness and modify it to work with your current body wiring harness and add extra wires for misc stuff, then you'll have to fab new motor mounts, find another transmission and get an adapter to run the gear drive transfer case unless you want a chain drive case which comes with the v6 4runners, but they aren't as good. There's a lot of work involved and if you don't know what you're doing or aren't capable of learning it and mostly understand wiring, then you're in over your head. You should do a lot of research and see what you're in for.

I can relate. After several thousand miles I also really got sick of the 22re. Yes the mileage is crap by today's standards, and they're not the holy grail of motors as many think they are.
However, it is better than the 3.0L. I'd never buy a 3.0 equipped vehicle, let alone swap one in.
The 3.4 would be a similar swap anyway, with a better motor.
I've heard 3rz swaps aren't too bad on a vehicle that originally had a 22re - You can still retain your original radiator, and transmission as they both use a W-series.
I'd go for either of those swaps if i were you. If I keep my runner, I'm driving my 22re into the ground til she blows, then dropping that zero and swapping in a hero.
22re - W56 trans, 116hp -- 3RZ-FE - W59 trans, 150hp
3VZ-E - R150 trans, 150hp -- 5VZ-FE - R150 trans, 180hp
And where I live, a 3.0 goes for nearly the same price as a 3.4, as they're in higher demand. Not even joking there.
If you got a free 3.0, sell it for good money and look into the better options. That's my take.

sell the 3.slow and save for a 3.4L in my opinion. Off road solutions sells a 3.4L swap kit with wiring harness and many other things.
I myself just put a rebuilt bored .020 over 22RE, 291 cam, oversized valves and header in mine. For what I've spent on the new engine, tranny, and tcase, I could've put in a 3.4L along with the tranny/tcase. Now I'm regretting it...a little.
Going through the rocky mountains to Moab, UT sucked SO much. However, driving around here in Missouri where I live, isn't so bad. Sure, it can't win any drag race other than a crawl race with stock Jeeps, but I like it.
I'll eventually swap over to a 3.4L, but that'll be a long ways down the road when I decide to do a long travel setup in the front. I figure I can try to find a wrecked T100 and steal the suspension and drivetrain out of one of those.

i also hear the vortec 4.3 is eaiser... opnions about chev asside... you guys know what motor has more get up and go? 4.3 or 3.4?

Probably the 4.3, it's higher on HP and torque, and that larger displacement probably makes it available earlier.
Keep it Toyota though! If I wanted an American engine, i'd buy a $700 F-body Camaro, not slam a dirty Chev motor under the runner.

ORS has been out of business for years, so an easy swap is out. Best bet is to torch the whole mess and buy something new with the insurance money,

That's what I thought. I hear about them on yotatech quite often in the engine swap section.
