I don't usually have great experiences with car or tire places. Being a woman, most places with mechanics and techs tend to think I am stupid. Sorry, but I do know something about cars and, in this case, tires and wheels. I'll admit I don't know everything or even close to anything, but I know far more than the average girl with a 4Runner.

Okay, so here's the scenario.

Yesterday I get my used 245/75/16 Toyo Open Country M/Ts and used 16" 2005 Toyota Tacoma wheels and take them in to a cheaper tire company to have them mounted and balanced. They charge $4 to mount and $15 to balance. Fair deal for a lifetime balance (especially since Mr. Schwab wanted THIRTY TWO DAMN DOLLARS EACH for mounting and balancing).

Since I didn't want my car's interior dirty (okay, so there's some prissiness there), my dad drove his truck with the tires and wheels in the bed, and I followed him over. They began to mount and balance, all is good. They finish. We head home. I know M/Ts have a lot more noise and vibration, but MAN, it was like I was offroad when I was on the nice, smooth, paved street at 45 mph. We got home and took another, closer look at the work, and there was a LOT of weight on the wheels. We decide that today I would go back and have them check.

So today I head over by my lonesome, and walk in and let them know what the problem is. "You have M/T tires. They're louder than street tires". I'm like, okay... I know that. This is more than that- I don't feel safe driving the car. "Since you have a lifetime balance, we'll do it again and go from there." Okay, sounds good. The tech comes out to take a look. "Oh, well look at the back tires. There is feathering and that's what's causing the noise and bouncing." Can you please just do the rebalance? I don't feel safe driving the car, and my dad said that the excessive weight is the issue. I'd like to make sure. "Okay, fine, we'll do the rebalance." (in a not so pleasant tone). So they take my runner in, and do the rebalance. The guy comes back in a few minutes later- "So we actually got in a new balance machine today, and hell- you were right. They were a little tweaked and wobbling, and took less weight when we rebalanced them." I said thanks, graciously, but on my drive home, I was like, No Shit, Sherlock.

Just because I am female doesn't mean I'm stupid. I know what imbalance feels like. Oh, and my Runner now is as smooth as it was with the street tires- just makes a little more noise ;)

Should have let loose on them so they don't pull that bull on someone else. but thats just me and my temper.:bluejump:
You would think in this day in age that that a woman may know more then they think she knows.

I kind of understand it because the majority of younger American women (or Californian, anyway) don't even know how to change their oil. For example, a friend of mine didn't even know what lug nuts were when I was telling her about my new wheels and tires. :cry2:

It's just the aspect of coming at the situation with the mindset that someone knows nothing just because of their gender. I wish that people knew how to handle situations differently with every customer. It's frustrating.

I mean, really. I grew up with a mechanic for a dad. I LOVE working on cars. :)

Suggest not doing business with them, and tell the owner why. No customer should ever be be-littled like they done to you.

Glad your tires are balanced but the treatment you recieved doesn't sound any different than a hundred boneheaded conversations I've had with auto people. Actually, the fact that they admitted making a mistake would make me inclined to use them again.

damn good point. I agree.

I had an almost identicle situation when I bought my Duratracs. Except I'm not female, I have a strong Australian accent. The chodes at NTB definitely had the 'You're not American so you probably come from a country without electricity' mentality.
"They're offroad tires sir, they always vibrate"
"They're offroad tires sir, they can never be balanced properly"
"Ok, we'll balance them again but never again"
"Wow, they were out of balance. Our machine cannot mount your rims properly"

You should have arrested them. j/k. :police: But really, tires guys are usually not mechanics but wish they were. It's a lot like security guard syndrome. I've had troubles with alignments and balancing and I finally found a shop that does it right (happens to be a Goodyear store), but even dudes have to be pushy sometimes.

The shop that re-did my alignment laughed and asked if I was sure if the first place even did anything because it was way out. I had them rebalance my tires for good measure and it happened that both of the rears were pretty far off too. They gave me a print out which I took to the original shop and used it to get a refund after they acted as if I knocked it out of alignment in the 4 days or so between. i just b*tched at them until I tired them out and got my $70 back. (Don't go to 4WP). Glad you got it rolling smooth!

I love the local Discount tire, for a couple reasons, 1: one of my friends used to work there,
2: one of my inspirations for lifting my 4runner and putting larger tires etc on my 4runner was one of the employees rigs!

they were even as cool as letting me go in while my trucks tires were off and getting balanced to adjust my coilover settings!! for anyone near Highlands Ranch in Co, its the discount tire on County Line and University

So, I guess what Im saying is if you see some pretty bad rigs outside a shop, fair to say they prob are cool with working on your rig! :0)
