I don't have any experience with the silverstars. I just upgraded to some Höen Xenonmatch head lights. The webside says they match the look of a 4,000k HID. I will tell you they are nice. I'm no expert but they put out a very nice very white light. I also run the Höen Endurance Fog Light Bulbs which are very yellow.

Those do look nice. The zXe aren't going to put out as much light as their Silverstar Ultras, but will be slightly more white. Not worth the money.

I wonder how the Höen Xenonmatch bulbs compare to the Sylvania Silverstar Ultras?
 
I have the Sylvania XFEs on my truck, an 05 Limited. I originally had what I assume to be stock bulbs for my low beams and there was definitely not enough light. I upgraded to the XFE because from what I understood was that those were the next best thing to doing an HID conversion. since the swap, I absolutely love them, they are significantly brighter than what I had in there.

I also never really researched any other brands that may only be available online or better than the Sylvania, so I cannot speak for other brands. I paid about $70 for a set of the XFEs.

Also switched my high beams to the XFEs from what the previous owner had in there, a blue LED light. I assume it was not for functionality purposes, but for "looks" when driving down the road, as it did not make the visibility better when they were on. Also noticed a significant improvement (obviously) from the LEDs to the XFEs, couldn't be happier.

I am interested in putting some work in on my stock fogs, not sure what the options are, but I think there's some HID kits available for them. I want to do some research and find out.....would love any input from folks, too!

Hey zstampe, where do you get your HID kits? I did consider that option when I needed to replace my bulbs, but I saw kits going for $150 or so, IIRC. I know there are hundreds of companies that make them, some better than others, of course. I'm just not familiar with all of the brands and what's better than others.

I used ddmtuning.com their kits run about 35 bucks with a lifetime warranty, it might be a 2 year warranty but regardless that's better than halogen. I'm running their 35w 4500k low beams and the 35w 3000k fogs and have had great luck with them since day one.
 
Oh wow, didn't realize that there were "new" HID kits for that cheap. I assume that those ratings (4500K) is a "white" light, correct? IIRC, the higher the Kelvin rating, the more blue the lights get.
Maybe when my XFE lights finally go, I can install some HIDs in my truck. Are they relatively easy to install with all the wiring that is already on the truck? I have basic-moderate electrical knowledge and skills, at best. It probably isn't too difficult to install....

Anyone know what part number the fogs are on an 05 Limited? is it the H9 or H11?

Another thread led me to their site, too! I ordered two sets of the slim ballasts (3000k fogs/5000k lows) and they should be here this week! I'll install them this weekend and try to take some meaning pics during the install.

I've been down the high performance bulb road in the past (with my Gen3) and ended up not being happy with the lifespan. I put a set of the Silverstars in my wife's car several years ago and they were a great improvement... at the time... noticeably brighter, whiter light. She had one burn out about a year after and didn't want to spend the cash for the Silverstars again so I grabbed just the base Sylvania bulb for about 1/3 the cost and couldn't tell the difference. One Silverstar and one base bulb showed zero difference in light output or color. Maybe the year-old Silverstar was worn out or maybe the newer, base bulb was just that much better, but they were the same. I don't know.

Anyway, when I first got my 2006 4Runner, I thought the headlights were fantastic for factory halogens and still think that they are, but people seem to rave about the improvement of the HID set-ups. It's hard to beat the price of the DDM's (even compared to performance replacements bulbs) and plenty of people have had nothing but good things to say.
 
Retrofit is always better. Invest ur money into something thats better, retrofiting can be easy, it just take some time and some know hows to get it done.
