Simple Key fob question 2000 4Runner

In order to program my 3 button key fob for my 2000 4Runner do I need to have a Toyota OEM key or can I use this Ilco key ?
I've had NO luck with Ilco key

Hey Russ. I believe you have to have an OEM Toyota key to get them to work. My Runner didn't come with an OEM remote, but I had to have an OEM key to program my remote on my Tundra. You might be able to find a lock smith that can help you save money and help you out.

I do not believe that is correct unless it is specific to Limited. My 2001 SR5 does not need an OEM key to program the remote. The OP needs to search because there are multiple different OEM remotes depending on whether a factory alarm is present and each has a part number. My 01 only had the factory option for remote entry and roll down rear glass. The OEM key (bought mine new so I know its the key) has no "intelligence". I actually used a spare to program a remote earlier in the year. You need a key to do the programming - directions are found with a search - because that triggers the programming mode. It just has to be a key that will start the vehicle and cycle the locks. Hint - you have to cycle the locks multiple times in the process. Using the switch generally fails because the age of the actuator. Rolling down drivers window and using a key in door lock works much better

For a 2000 sr5 you don't need a oem key. As long as the key works and you can cycle the ignition and the driver door locks you can program the key fob.
