Simple stereo upgrade options

Trying to figure out my options for a simple stereo upgrade for the 2006 4Runner (SR5). Currently have the stock head unit, and I don't know if this system has any external amps or subs that need to be considered. It's the in-dash CD changer, NO nav, NO JBL.

I really just want to upgrade the head unit with something that will give me some bluetooth, satellite, and Car Play functionality. Something more modern. I imagine I can find a relatively inexpensive double din that has these features.

I wanted to check to see if there were any other integration issues I need to be aware of for this gen/year of 4Runner.

Based on what you described for your vehicle, no real barriers exist!

$300-$500 gets you a touchscreen unit with CarPlay.

You’ll need a headunit, installation brackets, and an adapter harness.

Go to crutchfield.com and do a search for your vehicle year and trim level, they can set you up. Plus the installation accessories (brackets and harness) will come free with the headunit.

Edit: avoid the Alpine ILXw650. I have one, and have the RCA outputs were dead on arrival. Theres also a strange grounding loop noise. If it weren’t for that, I’d recommend it because everything else on it just works.

This is what I'm looking to do right now. After research and budget of 400, I decided to up the budget to about 1k and do it right.

Going with the Pioneer 7600nex because the 9in screen should fit perfect into the opening. But really because of the wireless android auto / carplay. Throw in the idatalink for steering controls and it's about 1k.

Sounds expensive, which it is, but I have my old unit since 2003 which was swapped from my old car, and I figured if it's going to be kept 10+ years, should get all the features for the long run.

The Pioneer 4400NEX will get you everything you need. There are authorized dealers on Amazon. I've got one of these in 4 vehicles right now.

So steering wheel controls are all I'd need to worry about when it comes to integration? There's no amp needing bypassed or integrated for the rest of the system?

Normally I'm approaching an entire stereo build, but its been years since I've done one, and I know there's a lot to consider with the new OEM systems that we didn't worry about years ago. The 2006 is not 'new', but this is about the time the OEM systems started to get more complicated.

I went with the cheapest CarPlay option Boss BE7ACP Digital multimedia receiver (does not play CDs) at Crutchfield

Works fine, no complaints

i probably would have gone with a unit that integrates obdii data if I did it again

A double din with android auto/car play would suit your needs quite well. While you are at it, if you want you could go a little father and replace the speakers down the road. I ended up having to replace the factory ones because my Pioneer head unit blew out the passenger side speakers. I would definitely recommend that you do this as they'll sound much better over the factory and you don't have to worry about them blowing out.

Something else you can do if it didn't come from the factory with it, is add the right-side steering wheel controls. It's very straightforward and really easy to do. The right side buttons simply plug into the left side buttons by using a ribbon cable. But overall a radio upgrade is definitely worth it and significantly improves sound quality. go to Crutchfield and get the Sony XAV-AX1000 I added the parking brake bypass from amazon. Kept steering controls. Takes more time to configure the wiring harness than anything, but works and fits perfect.

My son wanted a volume knob and front usb, that's why I chose it. but, it's a perfect look for 4th gen and is flawless.
