10" is great to add lows but doesn't overpower your music. Crutchfield has the model you are looking for with discounts on open box too:

I am considering improving the audio on my sr5 premium 4runner. First step thought about an unseat subwoofer like this. Its a 10inch unseat subwoofer from Cerwin Vega with 200 RMS. They also have a 12 inch unseat. Any experience with these? I dont want to spend that much for a full setup and dont want to sacrifice space in the trunk. Thoughts?

I like powered subs, I have a 10" with a sealed box that includes the amp, etc. all in one package. I'm no audiophile nor am I looking to win competition, just like some bass in my music.
As long as you understand what it is and what it isn't, the small ones are fine. What it will do: add some of those missing low notes that the stock size 5 1/4" woofer cones cannot produce. Nice bass notes for electronic, hip hop, jazz, or whatever you are in to. The powered units are easy to install and are relatively cheap.
What they are not: these will not rattle your car, they will not wake up the neighbors when you roll down the street. I'm not into that, but some people are. If you like to just sit in your car listening to deafening bass notes as your chest vibrates and not actually hear the music, this is not the sub you want.
With a smaller enclosure like these compact ones, you will get "punchy" bass that hits notes quick and fast, but will not give that rumbling "booming" bass that a larger enclosure gives.

I got a 10” 300 watt Rockford fosgate p300 self powered sub for about $175. Haven’t finished the install yet but from what I’ve read it sounds like I will be very happy with it.
It won’t fit under the seat but is compact and the box angle matches that of the rear seat so I will not lose much cargo capacity.
Interesting thing is it seems to mount with Velcro tape. Not my favorite as I’m not sure how well it will hold it down, but the flip side is I should easily be able to remove it if needed
