SIRT Training Pistol..Who else has one?

With the price of ammo still adjusted to account for the Obama administration, I have not been shooting near as much as I use to. So I decided to buy a SIRT pistol from NLT.

I have to be honest, it is very nice to be able to train some tactics that are not allowed on most ranges, not to mention without expending ammunition.

I have never been ultra proficient at trigger take-up. With this i can practice it over and over and over. very nice IMO.

But i think the biggest benefit to this is something they really do not even mention in the videos. Muscle memory, not just the typical stand, draw, point squeeze, scan..... But the on target without sights memory. I can draw (Safariland Tactical) and fire in a very clean shot group without ever having looked down the sights.

I know what you are saying...."man I can do that anyway"....as I know many of us who are or have been law enforcement, military, or anyone with hundreds of hours behind a firearm can. But with this I can practice getting on target in so may positions. crouching, hip fire, around obstacle fire, getting out of the shower with one hand covering my junk as i jump to the floor to take cover behind the toilet fire.....:hunter:

I really want to see how some of my drilling will translate to a paper target. I felt like I knew everything when it came to shooting...but this thing (I think, it could be false confidence) is upping my game.

Time will tell.....

Anyone else have one or has used one? Interested to know if you felt any real improvement in your live fire training.......?

I haven't used one of those, but it made me think of the Gander Mountain virtual ranges. Have you ever seen/used one? They have situational 300+ degree rooms that play video with CO2 cartridge 9mm handguns w/ laser tracking. Pretty cool. They also have the virtual range where you can unload as much as you want w/out spending a ton of $$$$$. I'd say the recoil is ~60-70% realistic, depending on the rounds you are normally using.

I was looking at those. I wish there was something that could even replicate some recoil too.

It would be wonderful if there was some sort of recoil, but I think the point of these is simply to built habits.

Sounds cool, I have not been to a range like that. I am considering getting a couple other training guns for different purposes.

I have to question how much this can really train you without recoil, sound, flash, or learning how to make follow up shots.

If at least it can teach trigger control then that's a huge plus!

It does help, I know may guys do custom triggers so trigger take-up is not a that important of a skill, but it nice to be able to practice it and other firing techniques without using ammo.

I recently got a new hk-p30. I love the pistol but I feel like a new shooter with it. The trigger pull is quite long, if that was comparable to my hk, I may be interested in it.

Yeah but for $10 you can get some snap caps or a laser cartridge and dry fire to your heart's content. :noidea:

I just watched a youtube video on that pistol. I didn't fully understand what the sirt was. I guess all it does is train you to not release the trigger too far beyond the reset. Other than that I don't see any training value in it. For that price I wouldn't bother with it.

I saw another training tool at my local store that uses a laser boresight that allowed you to dry fire on an electronic target. When you fire the pistol or rifle, the hammer hits the button on the back of the laser and turns it on. The target will light up where you hit it when the laser turns on. This system won't give any live feedback for recoil or getting back on target but it will teach you trigger control for any gun you have.

I have my own G17T and FX ammunition, and at the office we have the FATS® with pneumatic Glock pistols to simulate recoil

Yeah, and that's valuable practice. I guess I'm less interested too since it's only Glocks. I would think for a few hundred bucks they could roll out conversion kits for many guns or something along the lines of what you saw.

Also, not sure if anyone else does this, but I use one of these for finger strength. I initially bought it when I noticed some weakness in one of my hands. You'd be surprised how much it helps with trigger control.

Edit for massive picture... whoops

i have these, they do help but they also lack trigger release feedback. they are good for sighting you firearm or dry firing it to learn trigger squeeze, but it does not promote resetting the trigger.

not sure where you are getting snap caps or bore lasers for $10 but i paid more than that for mine.

I have looked into the training pistols with paint markers, or just the conversion kit for one of my Glocks. It is quite expensive to say the least and the ammo is even more than live rounds. I still have part of a box of the FX 9mm rounds. I modified a Hi-Point 9mm to fire the paint rounds, but in the end, nobody likes shooting a Hi-Point and other than live feedback on target it does not improve any technique.

As far as the FATS system, I have only ever fired on it once and it was not even when I was a police officer. I cannot see many people getting a chance to use this system, nor would it be within reason for someone to own the entire setup. Awesome scenario training, great reality, not so affordable.

I am still messing with this training pistol, it is not the end all be all for training, but it is an option that allows you to refine some trigger techniques with instant feedback for a couple hundred bucks (an amount you could spend on a single range visit with ammo). I will not know if it has helped me at all until next time I shoot, it may be a waste of money. I need to see if it will work with the laser activated targets, that may make it a little more effective.

The reset on guns is pretty different, but a lot of them have a noticeable click when you hit the reset point (most notably the M&P series). You can also find aftermarket parts for most guns, especially polymers, that basically eliminates the need to train for reset.

The snap caps and laser cartridges were found on Amazon. Love me some Amazon. :boink:

My gf and I are both LEOs and her shooting isn't always what it should be. I PREACH to her that a lack of grip strength is what's costing her better scores. It really is an underestimated aspect of shooting. Our dept carries sorry ass Beretta PX4s and the trigger pull/length of travel is ridiculous and I noticed a huge improvement in accuracy, esp at the 25 yard line once I focused on increasing my grip strength.
