Thought you all might want to know. Yes I know this there is an off-topic section but no-one goes there. This is important, the very existence of the internet is at stake. T4R.org is at stake.

If you have a 3rd-Gen you might want to read this, comment and put it back to the top.

January 18th is SOPA Day


This is not a joke. If you don't know what SOPA (& Protect IP) Acts are you need to know now.

They will destroy T4R as you know it. Reddit, Wikipedia and others are going offline. T4R should join.

Jan 18th has been designated SOPA day. It means that the site must go dark and post info on how to contact congress.

Whether you are liberal or conservative it does not matter. This is about the internet & future of T4R.

O8ama will sign the bill if it passes, don't kid yourself.​

I am working with, along with 38 million other members of LoL (Google it) at the prevention of it's passing... Many others are as well.
 
Yep Brian, you are right. I don't know how much other members realize how much is at stake here. I do try to banter with ya now and then in the off topic section.

The funny thing is that the bill's credo proclaims that it will give rise to creative and unfettered innovation so to speak, yet if the bill passes both chambers, I stand to believe that without this site and others, those who seek information, whether credible or not, won't be able to find it. Thus the bill creates an encumbrance to higher learning and thinking, exactly the opposite of what it purports to do.

Those companies state that jobs are being lost to piracy may be correct, but if jobs are to be created, who is betting that they will be in America? Not me.

A friend of mine who is a DC page said to expect a vote by both chambers before summer recess.
 
The very least we can do is keep this at the top.

Corporate supporters of HR3261 (SOPA) and S968 (PIPA) demand the ability to take down any web site that affects their profits -- without due process or judicial oversight -- in the name of combating "online piracy." Hoping you won't notice or care, quite a few of our Public Servants want to give them that right.

Believe it or not, Monster Cable (remember "Monster Park"?) considers craigslist a "rogue site" for blacklisting and takedown under PIPA - apparently 2nd hand sales of stereo cables by CL users is reducing Monster's sales of new cables. (reddit).

SOPA/PIPA authors and supporters insist they're only after foreign piracy sites, but Internet Engineers understand this is an attempt to impose "Big Brother" control over our Internet, complete with DNS hijacking and censoring search results.

These two proposed laws will do the following:

1) Criminalize under Federal Law the downloading, uploading OR linking of copyrighted content

2) Allow for the government to order a website "taken off the internet" without the right to have a JUDGE or jury trial.

3) Allow for individuals to BANNED from use of the internet via a blacklist again without the right to have a JUDGE or jury trial.

4) Posting a link (youTube, FaceBook, T4R ect) to an article, song, movie on a website will be ILLEGAL and the individual can be prosecuted AND the website can be taken offline.

These two laws are very unpopular but they may still pass, your voice does count. Please call your congressman / congresswoman.

Back to the top. I've called, emailed, and hard copy letter-ed my representatives. I also am in the process of emailing links to my friends asking them to do the same.

As far as the blackout, bet it's the most productive day I have at work all week...

Yes and the blackout would in theory divert to a page with details about SOPA & Protect-IP as well as contact info for members of congress.

Even if T4R stays up that day everyone can help by calling congress.

SOPA isn't exactly dead, just been put on the shelf for the moment, however PIPA is far from that..
 
Make no mistake, those in charge of the US government want more control of the internet and will not stop until they have it. Whether it be sopa, pipa, or any other acronym, we citizens must stand up for our rights, which are being whittled away little by little. Whether you agree with me or not, it's happening. The state of GA is considering passing legislation taxing all commerce done over the internet as are several other states. What comes next?

Think about the uprisings we saw in the north African countries and areas in the middle east last summer - those were largely organized day to day though the Internet and cellular networks. Iran 2 years ago I believe shut down access to the Internet for its citizens for 2 to 3 days due to political uprising. China largely censors what it's citizens can view on the internet. I don't need uncle Sam telling me what I can and cannot read. Think it can't happen here on our soil? Perhaps not today, but with the passage of these or similar legislative directives it can and will.

Wake up people. It's happening. We can stop it.

Lets keep it politically neutral as possible. I think all common folks whether liberal, conservative or independent would pretty much hate this law if they actually read it.

Yes but the major difference with regard to this thread is that "SOPA Day" is only a volunteer protest where site owners decide on their own to participate.

I just want everyone to express what they think T4R should do and then call their congressman about these two horrible bills.

Agreed and understood. My post was a worst case scenario as in X can happen 10 or less/more steps after if sopa is passed. Let's stop this particular bill in its tracks with notices to our representatives.
 
Just figured I'd chime in, even though I'm Canadian.

I along with my friends have discussed SOPA quite a bit, and are also appalled by the lack of foresight and harm this bill can/will cause if implemented. I really hope you all stand up for your rights and fight the bill with every option you have.

So far, the worst we've had to deal with up here is our major Telecom companies trying to force a limitation on bandwidth, and charging vastly increased rates to have higher levels of bandwidth. This was there way of trying to combat things like Netflix, iTunes etc, that were cutting into their satellite and cable TV offerings.

We managed to petition the government to stop such a bill from passing thankfully, and the same group called openmedia has moved on to try and stop a similar move being made against cell phones.

Keep fighting the good fight, because if SOPA goes down, I can't imagine the damage it will do to not only your populace in the form of freedom, but also what it will do to your economy. Popular sites are already pulling out of american webhosting services.
