The PITA is figuring out how to mount it and ensure the compass is accurate for your heading.

A lot of the current small GPS units have a combination of altimeter and sometimes barometers. Heck, even the Garmin watches like the Fenix have all of those things. Could make your own mount for one of those types of watches so you can wear while outdoors, take it off and dock it to a mount in the 4Runner.

Or... another option... bit more involving....
Most modern smartphones, the fitness tracker apps have compass, altitude, and temp/humidity. My shitty Samsung S4's app has those. Pick up an old used one online for cheap, shut off all the unnecessary bullshit and limit it to that app....

Ive been searching for a bit as well for something simple and accurate as far as a compass, and I have had no real luck.....lots of ebay searching for vertical compasses....there are some cool old ones or aviation stuff (but pricey)

So i guess the search continues.

look for a dash mount or bulkhead mount marine compass and make sure it has enough shielding for you to use inside your vehicle

What map app is that? I keep trying to find one I love, each has fallen short so far.

I second Gaia GPS Pro. It's well worth it if you like to explore remote areas as you can overlay maps to get a fuller perspective of the area. It's also really cool because it will show altitude/speed/heading/sunset-sunrise times/etc...

Sometimes it shows that you're below sea level :thumb3:

Another vote for Gaia... and a word of caution. Hema is the sexy name and has an app that looks like a fork of Gaia, but while Gaia is constantly getting updates Hema has had one minor update in the year since its release.

Disclosure: I bought Gaia before HemaExplorer was released and don't actually own HemaExplorer, I'm just going off the reviews and the release history as I did some research wondering if I should "upgrade" to Hema.

My watch does all of that stuff...get a good Frogman or equivalent watch and you can find all of that info and then some.

Same here, I got a Casio Pro Trek with altimeter, barometer and compass. The only thing is that you need to adjust altimeter before ascending and it might be inaccurate if weather changes rapidly (from Sunny to rain/overcast).

I just updated my nav firmware to v2.g1000 and I got this:

I like the horizon indicator, that could tell when the hill we are going down is too &^%$# steep and we about to do a face plant at the bottom.
