Sizeable oil puddle in the driveway. Look what I found...

Removed the skid plate, and look what I found. Looks like the O-ring was installed incorrectly, and the filter was torqued way past the point it's supposed to go. Glad I didn't lose all my oil on the highway and seize the engine!

I'm dealing with the exact same thing. Apparently ToyotaCare isn't exactly what I thought it was.

Sorry to hear it, man. I'm hoping the filter threads aren't jacked from dude torquing it down too tight. And you can see the O-ring in my pic...totally not where it's supposed to be.

The funny thing is, it was fine for two weeks, and then all of a sudden this weekend, I noticed a big puddle under the truck. Unbelievable.

O-ring should be in the inner groove near the threads, should not visible. The fact that is visible means it was incorrectly installed and not torqued down, tabs should line up.

That happened at the dealer?

That is terrible, but then again, no real technician actually does oil changes. You always get some low level lube guy that graduated from a Jiffy Lube.

I can't stand that cartridge filter... Toyota should have never went away from the canister. I love that older design and location from a maintenance standpoint.

Your post is going to start replies from those who change oil and filters themselves and this is one reason. Happens too often. I had one free dealer oil change, then after cleaning up the mess from the drips, do all my own now and squawk about the difficulty.

:censored:

Some vehicles will shut off the fuel pump when the oil pressure is too low, IMO all vehicles should have that feature.

You are correct; if it were in the right spot, it shouldn't be visible. Look at the pic; it's right between the housing and the filter flange...not at the end of the threads on the filter like it's supposed to be.

I had to leave so I haven't got to it yet, but it looks like it was torqued a good quarter turn (hopefully not a whole turn and a quarter!) past where it's supposed to be.

Definitely going to start doing this myself.

Went into the dealer to have them set up my windows to roll down with the fob, and since I had never used any of my Toyota care services (I do all my own maintenance) they decided to change my 1 week old oil and rotate my tires without my consent. I was furious, checked my oil filter housing and it was covered in oil, overfilled by 1 Quart, and threads on my radiator support brackets stripped.

That can be a problem. Sometimes a button will get pressed when in your pocket and you will come out to find your windows part way down.

I think they may not have torqued it as much as normal (the O-ring is obviously in the wrong spot too). Shouldn’t the flange rest against the housing? I always torque to factory spec and I thought I remember it being that way.

Hoping that's the case!

it's not overtorqued, it's actually a few turns short of snugged up. as others have said above, the flange and filter housing should be flush, but since they didn't put the o-ring in its proper, recessed position, it's physically blocking the filter housing from setting properly. the way they messed it up, it looks like the o-ring itself was actually acting as a weak seal, which is why it was fine for a short time before it finally shit the bed.

Surprisingly it’s never happened. You have to hit the unlock button once and then again while holding it down for the windows to roll down.

The shirt was a gift from my brother. I believe he bought on eBay. Google the what’s written on the shirt and it should come up.

Whoever designed this filter design and location needs to be beaten within an inch of their life.
I'm no engineer but I'm sure Toyota could have kept the same location from the previous 4.0.
They did this so that you have to take it to the dealership to have your oil changed.
I'm positive that I could have changed the oil in my 09 FJ by the time I'd take to get the skid plates off of the 5th gen.
This is one reason why I'm considering a 2015 Tacoma instead.

this has been discussed to death: the oil filter had to be relocated in order to add adjustable timing on the exhaust cam, making the new 1GRFE a Dual VVT-i motor. there is nothing about this arrangement that forces anyone to take it to the dealership to have their oil changed.

It’s not that bad.....
having the filter at the lowest point makes sense,
The reusable housing makes sense,
And the element kit is very inexpensive.

It takes a couple minutes longer than my last truck.
But still less time than writing a dramatic post about it

Worst oil change I have ever experienced in any automobile, anyway. I could do both other cars of ours (JK and QX56) in the time it takes me just to do the 4runner. That said, it just takes time. It's not hard. I will continue to do mine with synth every 7500k. No need to get the dealer involved here IMHO.

Inept huh? Nice way of grouping everyone under one shitty stereotype. How about this...I don't have the time to deal with doing yet another oil change on one of my 4 vehicles so my Toyota goes to the dealer? Inept you say? How about my time is worth more doing other shit than perhaps your time is worth? How's that feel? lol :playball:

That’s why I change my own oil, usually the most inept person gets the oil changes at the dealer.
