Ski Angel Fire, or just go to CO?

Fellow T4R skiers.... I need some input... Wife and I are planning a Spring Break ski trip for the kiddos, ages 4 and 6. Wife is a good skier who has been to CO tons of times, I suck a$$, kids haven’t learned anything yet. The plan is to drive, as we don’t feel like spending the cash on 4 plane tickets, plus rental car, plus accommodations, plus spending cash...Sooooo, we’ll pile into the 4Runner with roof-top carrier and hit the slopes (even though her car is more comfortable, my Runner is more suited for inclement weather).

Question is - since we are trying to keep this particular trip within a reasonable budget, is Angel Fire NM even close to Breck (or CC, Aspen, etc.)? We’ve done a family trip to Breck once already, but it was 3 yrs ago, so the kiddos were too small to really do anything except sledding... but we did like it.

What do you all think? Should we even consider Angel Fire? Or just plan for CO?

I've skied Taos, but not Angel Fire, however, I have skied almost all resorts in Co. Angel Fire won't compare to any of them: 3 lifts and predominately blue/intermediate terrain makes it a great mountain to start skiing. I also have 2 kiddos now 7 and 9 (started skiing at 2 and 3) It sounds like your wife will have more fun in Co., but for you and the Kiddos Angel Fire should be fine. 2-3 years is a short time to wait for a lifetime of fun ski vacations!!! I would suggest investing the $$$'s saved by skiing at Angel Fire on lessons for you and the kids. In time the entire family will be ready to tackle big mountains like Taos, Breck, and/or other Colorado resorts.

Short story: start with Angel Fire until the kiddos are ready.

Having worked at angel fire for two seasons (SB Instructor) and make regular visits to see friends.. Angel fire is MUCH more family friendly than Toas. Much less intimidating than Toas (while still offering great advanced terrain, although in limited quantity) and a great town to support the resort.

They are pretty good on snow right now too having just got a foot in the last few days.

The only other somewhat nearby places to consider are Red River and Purgatory.

Thanks for the input guys! We went ahead and decided that we’ll try NM.

We are renting a place outside of Taos, but are very aware that AF will be the place to take the kiddos. We figure we’ll spend time checking them both out (but I’ve read enough to know that Taos isn’t much of a beginner mtn).

Really appreciate the feedback. I’ll let you guys know how it goes.
