skid plate removal

stupid question here.... how do i remove the skid plate? I removed all the bolts I could see from under the 4runner and it seems like it should just fall off, but it seems like it is still attached somehow. is there a clip or something? thanks.

There are two pieces, the front and back. After removing the bolts for the rear piece, you kinda have to wiggle it to get it out. For the front plate, there are two bolts that are deeply sunken in, so you are going to have to get a socket extension of some sort to be able to reach it. Hope that helps.
 
On my '00, the front plate has 7 bolts total: 3 up front, 2 recessed mid-way and 2 rear. I don't bother removing the rear plate.
 
There are hooks on the very front of the first plate but as the others said it is probably the rear skid plate bolts that are keeping the skid from dropping.
 
12 mm all 7?

All 7 are 12 mm - 6 point sockets work better to avoid stripping the bolts. Middle bolts are in the holes on the slope of the front plate.

A couple of the hex bolt heads that mount into the frame up front have sheared off. I think it's because of the rust - it's an '01 SR5.

Anyone have any ideas on how to remove the rest of the bolt? I've got nothing for a socket to grab onto. Darn things rattlin' like a you-know-what.

Do even worry about it? Should I just remove the whole plate altogether? I worry about the radiator hanging so low. Advice would be appreciated!

Here is how I did one of those bolts. This was with the frame off the truck and upside down, so it makes for great pics. But the process is the same.

How many plates should be on a 96 4Runner?

I just bought mine, but it seems like I only recall seeing the one in the very front of the truck?

2 from the very front under the radiator to just past the steering rack, 1 'plastic' one (on some trucks) under the front driveshaft, a tiny steel one on the bottom of the transfer case and one under the gas tank.

[MENTION=156409]andyo[/MENTION] - I don't really care for driving without the plate because the radiator hangs a bit below the frame and I'd hate for a rock to go through it just because I didn't put the plate on.

Now I've got to go look. I think I have all of that except the "second" one.
