Slight hesitation when putting into drive?

I have noticed that when I go from reverse to drive that there is a slight hesitation. When the accelerator is pressed it takes about a second to respond and then the truck lunges forward as if it is making up for lost time. This only happens from reverse to drive and sometimes from park to drive. It seems to be a computer issue with the eletronic accelorator or something along those lines.

Just wanted to start a thread (or maybe there already is one) on this issue. I wanted to get some responses from others before contacting the dealer. I would think this is a chip or maybe an adjustment to correct this problem.

Please share your thoughts if you are or are not having this problem. Thanks!

I haven't noticed that but I did notice getting into reverse is sometimes difficult.

I feel like I've noticed delayed acceleration issues also. Nothing major but it feels a bit delayed accelerating from a stop sometimes.

Are you still rolling backwards a little while putting it into drive? Make sure you come to a complete stop in reverse before throwing it in drive - I've been a bit careless sometimes and thrown it in drive while I was still going backwards a little bit (like on a hill for example) and I've noticed the delay...(at one point the traction control actually kicked on for a second?)

At any rate, I think its the car trying to protect the drivetrain from damage by throwing forward power to gears going in reverse.

I have this same issue when I go from reverse to drive. Only happens I think when I have been driving for a while, and the engine, tranny is all warmed up. It is kinda scary how it lurches forward after after a second or so. My 2008 Tacoma did the same exact thing so I haven't stressed over it. I think mine did it once just going from neutral to drive so it might not have anything to do with the reverse, since the neutral position is on the path to drive.

The A750F takes up to 1.2s to go from P-R and P-D. It takes longer going from R-D because it shifts into second BEFORE first giving it a "smoother" transition.

You can thank the LX470 for that.

Its fine, sometimes Im too quick on the pedal and can feel it jolt into gear.

Oh yea and before you start moaning about a clanking sound, thats drive line slack which again is NORMAL.

Personally I haven't noticed or been bothered by the slight hesitation (slack). And I haven't felt the vehicle "lunge" forward.

For me, that slack comes in real handy when you're off road trying to gently maneuver the vehicle.

i have noticed that same thing lately. i had started a thread about excessive tranny lag at slow speeds and that seems to have gotten worse slightly. ( you know its bad when your wife notices it and complains ! )
i have a call into the dealer that i bought it from and they seem more motivated to help.
(i have no technical data to back this up and am talking out of my #%& right now) but i can just tell somehting aint right with this tranny! it has little downshifts and upshifts that arent quite right and the lag is strange...
my fear is that if the computer issue that may be causing this is not taken care of, will it in the long run cause more physical wear and tear on the actual transmission? just a thought, im not a mechanic.
anyway, ive been told by the toyota case manager at corp, that we should complain and bring this issue up so it gets fixed!

I have not had any problems like that with my 5th, only 4k though. My old suv I did not care too much and would toss it from R to D and back again without stopping completely, but not with the new 4R, not sure if that has anything to do with it. I know if you try to shift w/o stopping completely the traction control/HAC system will kick on, wonder if something with that is causing the issues.

I get a jolt when shifting into D from P or R. When going from N to D, there is some hesitation after pushing the accelerator.

I've had the same problem since my vehicle was around 4000 mi. Everytime, I shift from R to D, I hear roaring sounds from gearbox underneath and there is a little push when the gears are engaged. This problem seems getting worse when the weather is cold and when I first start in the morning. It's getting more annoying now when my vehicle is around 15000 mi. I brought up this issue with local Toyota dealer the first time about 10 months ago but they said it was OK. This time, I have to drop it off overnight so they can test it early in the morning when it is still cold. I will let you know the results later.

I had the TSB done and driving (slowing down for curves/turns and then accelerating) was night and day difference, but it does not fix this hesitation from P to D or R to D, etc.

I have it also. Ill go in reverse, put it into drive and its almost like nothing is happening.....then it gets going. There is definitly a lag between the reverse and drive. Weird thing is it doesnt happen all the time.

I have it too and it is the only thing on my truck that bothers me. Take the example of trying to pull a quick 3 point U-turn, it bothers me I cannot just throw it in D and go, the truck just sits there for a minute then lurches off...

I haven't seen any issues with the transmissions yet, but that doesn't mean they couldn't be there. I have noticed that sort of lag in a LOT of vehicles and it can end up being a "is it kind of, maybe, not really a problem?"

Something to keep in mind is that this might be a self-preservation function of the transmission itself, that brief pause might be from the system waiting for the gearsets/momentum to slow down enough before kicking it in the opposite direction. Ever tried to do quick reverse then slam into 1st gear on a manual transmission?

For the 4Runners you need to remember our drivelines are famous for the "Clunk" which is really the driveshaft winding up. So even in situations where there isn't a noticable "clunk" the driveline can still be winding up, giving you that brief "nothing" moment followed by a jerk. Ruling the driveline out does point to the transmission, whether or not its a hydraulic or electrical issue is something that is going to be very difficult to figure out. Assuming by this point we've concluded it is infact an issue with the transmission, I would highly recommend having the dealer check it out and bothering Toyota about it directly. If they have enough of these cases it will trigger factory techs to inspect these cases and possibly determine a TSB or Recall if applicable.

you're right, they're designed to lag a bit so ppl don't pound them in drive n slam the gas.. i don't like it.. but its there so you don't neutral bang your trans.

i did the drive train clunk tsb when coming to a stop or pulling away you get a clunk.. and my clunk noise and feel is completely gone
