Alright so a buddy and I are tackling Taco LBJs and outer tie rods tomorrow. I recently jacked up the vehicle and did the hands at 9 and 3 trick to check for inner tie rod play. The driver side definitely had some play so I pulled back the inner tie rod boot just the other day and discovered grease/sludge on the rod that the inner tie rod screws into that goes into the steering rack. I assume it's the rod that's connected to the steering gear.
My question is if this means my rack is leaking slightly, (there is NOT severe caked on grease all over the outside of the rack) should I even install the new inners that I bought? I don't want to replace both inners and then in six months find out I need a new rack because it's spewing grease. If I never would have pulled back the boot I would have never suspected it was leaking. The steering itself feels just as good as any of our other lower mileage vehicles, other than the "looseness."
