Small Compartment Use?

Hey guys, just curious - there's a small flip-down compartment right by the toggle switches for the sunroof, on my 98 4Runner. Doesn't seem to be room in there for a garage door opener or glasses...the usual stuff I've seen compartments like that for.

What do you use it for?

My particular garage opener fit after nibbling a few bits out of the compartment.

**NOTE**
Some of you are not noticing he (and I) have the 1st gen (pre-99) roof console.

In one 3rd gen 4runner I found, in a junkyard outside Richmond VA, in the small compartment two packs of Trojans UR. So I got out quickly and proceeded to burn my clothes.

In mine personally, a SO pocket screwdriver and a roll of 3m 88 electrical tape.

Oh u mean this one I hacked all up?

Back when I had a 98, I used to keep a couple of $10 bills in there as a "just in case" kind of thing for gas or food or whatnot.

To be honest, it's a pretty useless space. I bought a 99+ overhead console to install instead but didn't get around to it before the frame rotted out and I had to ditch the rig.

FYI, I still have the 99+ console. Shoot me a PM if you're interested in taking it on as a project.

haha when the trucks ah rocking!!!

never really paid much attention to the minor cosmetic changes throughout the 3rd gen years.

Glad to say I have a 99+ I suppose.

I can say that if my truck was older and had the compartment you speak of, it would have been the first on my list to try and replace. That thing looks useless. Sorry for you guys!

I always thought that smaller one was for your insurance card. That's at least what my buddy used his for. Worked well.

The updated interiors are much better. I have a 01 and when I go to the junk yard and see the 96-98 interiors you can tell Toyota fixed a lot of stuff in the later years.
