2008 4R have heard and read a lot of people have this Issue and Toyota's ability to just brush the issue off. Anyone hear of a better way to fix it other then simply fronting the money to get a whole new system with side exit ?
it's literally a $50 "fix." Cut off the resonator, buy a 90* bend and weld it on or have an exhaust shop do so...it's not an issue...they're supposed to stink as that means it's more or less working...Toyota never suggests one drive their 4runner with the rear window open...so that's their disclaimer to why they have zero f#*$'s given...
There are also MULTIPLE service bulletins about this (TSBs). Some dealers will ***** out it, and some will replace it or fix it as best they can. I got my dealer to replace it on my 2007 -- the entire thing -- but I've heard mixed results.
Otherwise just cut off at the resonator, as mentioned, and fashion a side-out exhaust tip behind the rear wheel. That'll take care of 95%+ of the eggy smell. Any crappy body shop can do it too for cheap...
Not trying to call you out, but please use the search before you start another "new" thread :lookout:
admin I know you have other stuff but the amount of these threads as well as whats/how 4wd work, and atrac vs vsc is a little overdone? Is there a possible way to clean up the threads in the 4th gen section?
Just to name a few
Although they may not have the exact same title if pulling this up in less than 2 minutes, and if researching and reading through the conversations/opinions/references you will see that they have been done in detail previously and they are a wealth of knowledge and very well documented.
SO if I understand then IT will have more sound to it ? I got this used and I think its a upgrade on the exhaust as the tip sticks out about 3" and has a sliver oval tip on it.. If it makes more noise I am all about that

I'll just add that this isn't a sure fix. I did this years ago and still get the smell. The real solution is to roll up the rear window before you stomp the skinny pedal.
Correct. The resonator being deleted will probably bring up the exhaust note roughly 5db...er...not very much. It gets in the way more than it's designed for...it was supposed to aide in the drone some hear at certain RPMs...If it is sticking out 3" than you may have an aftermarket exhaust...or perhaps just a tip that some 4runners had as an option I believe...
No need to apologize for asking questions...that's what this forum is for...ideally, using the free tools (search) first will answer most questions but occasionally locating the exact intent of your queries can be tough...so ask away after you've exhausted, no pun intended, your free resources.
