i've done a search through the forum and through google, but cant seem to find any information as to where i can find smittybilt tube bumpers that are made for jeeps... or at least thats what my search brings up. i've seen a couple of 1st and 2nd gen runners with these bumpers and was wondering if smittybilt made these for 4runers or if they fit our runners? and if they also fit on our runners, what year jeeps should i look for, for these bumpers. i think they look nice and would be a cheaper alternative to other bumpers such as TG or badlands, and others. but is the protection up to par with these types of jeep tube bumpers. Thank you!!!

As far as I know they stopped making them. Check eBay and Craigslist for used ones. Highly doubt any from a Jeep would fit a 4runner without chopping the mounting brackets off and moving them.

I have one on my 85.
its decent for what it is, but its not even close to a dedicated trail bumper. they are made with thin wall tubing, and will dent/bend with the slightest impact.

when I got mine years ago, they didn't list one for an 85, but they did for an 87. which I thought was strange. the gf at the time had an 87, and she had a tube type rear bumper. im pulled hers off and bolted it to mine to verify all the mounts were the same. they are. I bought the one for the 87. its been on there for 10+ years now...

I had a set of Shittybuilts on my '86 for a while. They'd crumple any time a rock even looked at them sideways. I don't think they were ever intended to get in fights with granite, I think they were made and marketed to the nerf bar/brush guard crowd.

If you want that style of fat-tube bumper, see if you can find a fab guy to make them out of some decent metal.

Oh, so these were specifically made for 4runners and smitty just discontinued them? i thought that some guys just took them from jeeps and bolted them up. Thanks for the info! i like the way they look more so than anything.lol. Fill the tubing with concrete.lol.

These were made Toyota specific. The front bumpers for p/u and t4r are the same but they made a different t4r rear. The front have a model year run that are 1st and 2nd gen specific but the rear is 84 to 95 interchangeable. The only place to find them now is Craigslist or junk yard. I ran these for years in the 80s and 90s. They are way better protection then stock. And look cool. If you want rock abuse worthy there are better options out there however. If just for a light duty trail rig there great. This is a pic of my bros that we just picked up from pickapart. jugzuger

I've got one on the rear of my '85 that I want to get rid of. What are these things worth? Pisa 8687

It's worth at least $150 to $175 I ok condition and can go up from there you just need someone who wants it. List it and you may have to sit on it a bit but it will sell.

its been many years, but I think I paid about $175 for mine when new.

Ya they where way more reasonable than the stuff we get offerd now. But less durable too. The folks that love them will still pay to get them. The perks of discontinuation.

pisa, thats a nice rig! yea, i like the asthetics of those bumpers. i like plate bumpers better though, but for what they are, i like the looks of the old smitty's. i don't do any hard core or even moderate trail riding (just haven't gone out yet). thanks for the info everyone!

I too really like the look of them......

If you find a used one, look it over very carefully. Also drop the bumper onto the ground to see how much rust is rattling around...... They tend to rust out....

If you find one in decent shape, take off the caps on one end & slosh rust killer around, then wash clean. then slosh truck bed coating all around inside it. Hand sand or blast the out side clean & do the same to keep it from rusting in the future.....
