smkd13's Build Thread

Extra!!! Extra!!! Read all about it!!!

So finally making a update for this build thread I have been super lax on lately. Between work, and the severe amount of “modification trips” to Idaho I have been making I haven’t had the time to sit down and update anything. But here we go, where to start, where to start????

Ok so sliders it is! Back at the end of April I finally got my sliders. Made my mandatory trip to ID to install them as I have access to two full shops up there. One is a auto shop and the other is basically a fab shop for the most part. As I am anal about everything and like to do all my own work, welding included, I go there. But on to some pictures:

Mounted up and grip taped (grip tape is from home depot, 2” wide, $15, only one roll needed):

Here is what my welding looks like not the best but decent:

Here is a better example of it (done on my buddies frame that we had to patch, mine was the vertical weld in the corner):

I got my new bump stops installed (yes I fab’d the spacers myself):

Uniden Pro520XL is installed w/ 5’ FS and Wilson Coax (SWR = 1.1 on 1 and 40):

Got my Blue Sea Aux Box installed (40 amp maxi fuse soon to be breaker):

Gave the good old girl a treat with some AmsOil and OEM filter of course:

And because I am a cheap ass and don’t see a point to extended brake cables I welded the mounts higher up and bent the tabs, so no more strain on the brake lines at full droop and flex:

I was having a rubbing issue on my rear bumper so I “clearance” it:

After “clearancing” of my bumper, my exhaust stuck our pretty bad so that had to be fixed and this was my best option. Clean and out of the way:

I also removed the fender flares as I lost one on the freeway so here you go:

Installed a Thrush Turbo exhaust. It give a little bit of a better sound and no drone, I actually want it to be a little louder though. As well, I am happy with it that it doesn’t hang down as far as the old one:
Finally lost a fender flare on the freeway (it was gonna happened), so those got removed. Gotta find someone with a welder that I can weld up the holes with (the one I have access to is to strong):

I also found out that I had a seized adjustment cam for my alignment. We messed up the bolt trying to break it free and so I tracked down a new one. Got two used ones, a lower control arm and a LBJ for 32 bucks from the salvage yard (trail spare):

My buddy actually had a set of LCAs with new bushings in them that he wasn’t using from his Taco, so we compared them and they are the exact same as a 4Runner. The swaybar location is different but everything else is the same:

Out with the old:

In with the new:

And for all you who are wondering how much of a difference there is in Tacoma and 4Runner LBJs well here is your comparison, the lower stud is the same but the OTRE hole is obviously bigger on the Tacoma:

New OTREs finally:

And now the big one: Light Racing Upper Control Arms!!! After a decent discussion with my buddy we decided that Launch Controls are lower on the list than getting my front end suspension squared away so I returned them and got a the LRs. Install was straight forward and to the point. The only pain was getting the UBJs but nothing a hammer and big socket didn’t handle fine. Installed the slug adapter and set the arms for max camber and +2 caster. Here is the end result of the install (sorry no install picture this time):

and at full droop here is where they are sitting. I love the clearance of the spring I have with these:

Looking good Ben! Man you have been busy, everything looks like it came out great, Im not really a fan of our trucks without the flares but i understand they are expensive and hard to find if you lose one.

The LR ucas are great, i have had no trouble out of mine since installing them in January, it looks like you are at the "D" position for the adjustment up top. You say you set them at max camber, so yours are slid as far outboard as possible? Wont that cause more wear on the outside shoulder lugs? What do your alignment numbers look like?
