Snorkel Update :/

Well.... the long story short is it's a close fit. However not close enough for my liking. I contemplated for at least half an hour and decided I will wait for Safari Snorkels to make one for the 5th Gen 4Runner. I guess it will be a patience game:fishing:

The internal plumbing side of the snorkel is a perfect fit. The ONLY way to get the snorkel to mount is to mount it lower on the fender line, which means two things. 1) Highly prone to trail damage as it sticks out so far 2) The Air Ram would be sticking out so far for the A-pillar it would look ridiculous. The gaps would bother me as well. Theoretically speaking it can be done.... Just not on my truck.

ARB's truck was there and I made a big fuss about them trying it on theirs... but it didn't get very far. It was worth a try in my opinion.

Is that the truck ARB USA built up and had on Expo? Truck looks good!

If so, how is the OME suspension working for you? Any complaints?
 
Do you think heating and bending would reduce some of the gap? Knowing someone who hydrolocked fairly deep into a trail I'm itching to find a solution. Considering that Safari doesn't even have a 2nd gen Tacoma snorkel (they make the Hilux one fit) I highly doubt we'll ever see them produce one for the 5th gen 4Runner.

I agree, unless there is a huge outcry for it. ARB has a very hard time wrapping their heads around the North American market. They are very used to dealing with a finite model line up down under, and a captive marketplace. There is a bit of tension in divisions right now.

I personally think they should split and have a NA ARB that can make its own decisions about products and marketing. Just my opinion.

Hopefully we can get some 4Runner specific parts. I like their front bumper, but would love to see a modular rear bumper from them as one is really needed. The snorkel would be icing on the cake.

It is far less about water forging as it is about dust; getting the intake up away from the engine compartment where turbulent dirty air swirls around. I will take a picture of my engine bay when I get back from the desert next week and you will be amazed on how dirty it is compared to the rest of the car.

Yes, that is the truck (with the Roof Top Tent) that ARB built up and had on display at the Expo.

I happen to have the same suspension set up on mine as theirs. I have had no issues apart from the front left strut... It either is a faulty strut (yes it happens) or it got damaged from improper install. The good news is being ARB they will replace it for free! Otherwise you cant go wrong with OME setup (IMO)! I have had mine installed for almost a year to date.

Yes, its possible... but it will just look silly and be mounted in an accident prone
Location. To close the gaps a lot of cosmetic touches will be required. I wish I took a side shot now thinking about it... to mount it to fit the contour of a prado you have to mount it low, almost to the fender flare. The likely hood of this being ripped off is more than I care to imagine certainly at $800+ with install.

I'm not giving up just yet but at the same time I'm not putting lipstick on a pig :)
 
It seems to me (in the case of finagling) that the more of the snorkel that runs along the outside of the fender, the more precise the fitment needs to be.

I think it would make more sense to route it inside the fender for as long as possible, and have it come out as close as possible to the front door. The tubing inside doesn't have to be pretty since no one will ever see it. Is the opening at the end of the snorkel (the part that the little scoop attaches to) metric in size or standard? If one were to make one themselves it would be nice to be able to use a pre-made scoop or pre-cleaner. Metric tubing is hard to get a hold of here in the states.
 
something else i've been looking at was the 4th gen 4runner intake being formed to fit onto a 5th gen.

you would have to do more internal pipe routing but it could theoretically be doable.?
 
I searched high and low in every international market for a 5th gen 4runner with an oem snorkel and found nothing since they only sell them in just a few countries. Sigh... it just baffles me to no end.

I think that a skilled guy like the dude from the TV show extreme 4x4 could relatively easily fabricate a metal pipe that ran inside the fender and then near the door came out and ran up the windshield frame. My wife calls the guy "pig man" and refuses to be in the room when I watch that show.

Anyway, make it look like the Mantec snorkel from LR Discovery II. That would be my ideal....

If running in dry and dusty areas you should install the cyclonic pre-filter from the FJ Cruiser. It works great. Takes all of 5 minutes to install and can found used for cheap.

I would definitely use a pre-filter...but the snorkel comes first! LOL

We have to get this figured out.

I feared no one would get that but sure enough I feared wrongly! :D

Mantec has actually been around for quite some time and originates from my neck of the woods.... across the pond. Im heading there in two months, maybe at this rate with a 5th Gen fender flare:wink2:
