If the traction coefficient is the same for chains on either axle, why not put the chains on the back so you'll feel a lot less vibration?
One other reason: normally the power distribution is 60% Rear /40% Front, and with front wheel spin you get 71% power delivered to the rear axle. If the rear axle spins, the power distribution is 53% Front / 47% rear.

Bottom line: If you're going to have one axle slipping due to no chains, the greatest efficiency can be had with the chains placed on the rear axle. (Sorry for the boring math lesson.) Can you tell I've worked for the govt. too long?

I bought these...Super Z LT
from Pep Boys last year. Haven't used them, but after doing the homework they seem to be the best ones for the Runner. Use 'em on the rear tires only as I don't think there's enough clearance on the front.

I only got two uses out of them. They recently broke. I was driving about 40mph on some wet road for about 3 miles. I was going to pull over and take them but one of the cables brok before I had a chance to pulll over.

I loved the Super Z LT because they were so easy to install. I did drive on some roads that were very scrapped for probably the same 3 miles or so, and mine didn't break. I'd even consider buying them again if they break because the install was so effortless. BTW, I posted pics of them in the thread linked in my signature.

there were a lot of pot holes. but it was the side cable that broke. man you say they are easy to put on. i had to use vice grips to stretch the cable to get them on. i know i had the right size. but man they were hard to get on. which link under sig is the pic?

The black elastomer (big o-ring rubber band thing) might be very sensitive to temperature and not stretch very well on a cold day. I purposefully kept them inside the night before, for this very reason. Try that next time and see if it helps.

The time I put on my dad's chains, the elastomer was very cold and that was the main problem I had. We actually did it will two people.....one stepping on the rubber band while holding the roof rack and the other guiding it to clip it on. They should come with two ratings of bands. One for the extreme cold and one for warm days. Kinda like how surfwax has different temperature ratings.......well, not a perfect analogy.
