So How Much Did You REALLY Spend on Your Gen 3 4Runner?

My parents bought it new off the dealer's lot back in January 1998. Sticker price was $35,095.00. After the trade in of their Mercury Cougar the total for the 4Runner was about $31k.

Between maintenance (oil changes, diffs, transfer, transmission oil, spark plugs, LBJ's, etc), general fixing up, the mods (interior and exterior), and let's not forget the expensive shipping to HI, I spent over $8k easy on the 4Runner. I was lucky though, as my parents were very generous to give me the truck for free.

$8k is a lot to put into a 14 year old vehicle, but the 4Runner is truly a worthy investment. It is the only vehicle in our family and farm business, Toyota and non Toyota, that has been this trouble free and reliable.

I paid $12,000 in 2008 for my 1999 SR5. When I bought it had 79,000 miles.

I bought new BFG AT for $800 (still driving on them)
All new fluids, timing belt, drive belts and TRD exhaust about $3,000 dealer service, they did a lot of stuff.

So I was in for about $15,800 and I still consider it well spent money.

I paid $5,900 yesterday for my '97 SR5 with 130k. It's exceptionally clean and only has a few minor issues.
Oh, and I already ordered new front pads and rotors for it, too.

Paid $12,500 for our 2000 2wd SR5 with 78k miles in 2006.

One set of Michelin LTX M/S tires - $750 (still got some life left ~75k miles later)
New MAF - $120
Front pinion bearing went south, so I bought a whole used axle for the 3rd member -$300

All told, $13,670 for 130k miles (it has 208k miles total now) of essentially trouble-free driving is the best money we ever spent.

I'm about to drop a big chunk of change on it though. Tires, timing belt/water pump, LBJs, valve cover gaskets, transmission cooler, and drive belts. My wallet just shivered.

In 2011
2000 SR5 4wd with 69,000 miles = $10,500
5 oil changes with Castrol Syntec = $200
199mm Tundra brakes, rotors, and OEM pads = ±$300

So I am into it for around $11,000 dollars. Not bad for a sub 100,000 mile 3rd gen.

Almost forgot about to do the timing belt water pump and all the other good stuff that goes with it and that will add up to another $650 with parts a labor. :ybrick: Its small price to pay for many more miles of happiness!

Purchased my 98 Limited E-Locker in 2005 for $13,000 with 69k on the clock. All maintenance, t-belt, water pump, tune up, axle seals, bearings, two sets of tires, brakes 199mm upgrade, exhaust, upgrade stereo, Wet Okle covers, OME lift $6-$8K over 100,000 miles.

And miles of enjoyment in the past and to come.

Bought my 97 SR5 4x4 with 132,000 miles in April for 4,200$. I paid a mechanic buddy 1,000$ to help me find a great truck and diagnose any problems and fix what we could. Like other guys on here, I have a laundry list of maintenance items I've completed in the last 3 months of ownership and here goes:
1) Installed Sonoran Steel 1.2 Alternate Kit
2) Replaced LBJs, UBJs, and inner/outer tie rods
3) Used Denso plugs and NGK wires
4) Flushed the tranny
5) Rear diff service
6) Replaced the left front CV, which was cracked
7) New lower control arm bushings
8) Rebuilt and rebalanced the front and rear driveshaft due to poor maintenance by PO (got a great deal with help from a friend)
9) Replaced rear axle bearings and seals
10) Replaced both my front and rear brakes (Did this before I knew about the Tundra brake upgrade, so I'll eventually do this)
11) Installed Hankook Dynapro ATs 305/70R16
12) Had my Ultra wheels powder coated a semi-gloss black
13) Installed Energy Suspension sway bar bushings
14) Installed Duralast Gold battery
15) Installed B&M tranny cooler
16) Upgraded dome and cargo light to blue LEDs I got on Oznium.com
17) Removed running boards and cheap wheel flares installed by PO
18) Plasti-Dipped the emblems
19) Replaced passenger door cuz of poor body work performed by PO
20) Aligned suspension and balanced tires
21) Installed new toggle switches for running lights and extra radiator fan
22) Installed Ultra-Gauge, though I still need to calibrate it
23) Replaced my torn up armrest with one from a 2000 Isuzu Rodeo
24) Had a buddy rewire most of my truck, including lights, stereo, and problems with dashboard
25) Swapped all speakers and tweeters for Pioneer
26) Painted my floormats black
27) Taco Whip Mod
28) Replaced missing plastic clips in doors and center console
29) Painted chassis/undercarriage, which was already rust-free
30) Painted front bumper, grille, rear bumper, and rear brake spoiler with SEM trim black
31) Reconnected AC clutch, so now I have a working AC just in time for summer!

All told, including original purchase price, taxes, and fees, paying my buddy a finder's fee, and above-listed items, I'm into my truck 11,000$ or so. I consider this a steal for such an awesome truck though. I get so many comments and questions here in SoCal. My girlfriend always laughs and says more guys look at me than girls do, but I take that as a compliment. Besides my 65 Mustang, this is my favorite vehicle I've ever owned and that's worth a few bucks. Plus, I plan on driving this truck until it completely dies and is past the point of resuscitation.

Dude, fantastic progress on that truck. Your mods and fixes are necessary and tasteful.

Your care for the truck shows. Not surprising that so many people want to drive their 4Runners til the wheels fall off... then put them back on and drive some more.

It's love, really... just a really well built vehicle with every reason to appreciate.

Keep up the great work, JasetheDamager

Worth every penny so far...

Damn, I can already tell that this truck is going to be a never ending upgrade project (not because it will need any of this, but because I've had it a week and am already wondering what took me so long to buy a 4runner because I'm madly in love with a 14 year old truck haha).

$5900 for a 1998 SR5 5-speed with 125k August 2012.
-$300 for a traded in '99 Maxima with 276k for scrap value
$5600 purchase price

All scheduled maintenance done, TB/WP at 90k, new clutch at 110k, half tread left on the tires. Car was in New Mexico until 2008 when it moved to a covered garage in Boston. Underside is freakishly clean for a 14 year old anything in Mass...

So far I've done the following:
NGK plugs
Bosch wires
Toyota OEM Air/Fuel/Oil Filters
Castrol High Mileage 5W-30
Sea Foam treatment (100 miles before the oil change)
Cleaned MAF and throttle body
Royal Purple gear oil in tranny, xfer case and both diffs
Reset EFI
Plasti-dipped emblems
Taco whip mod
Rear breather extension mod
Removed running boards and added OEM front mudflaps
Touch up paint pen for the only 2 scratched on the damn thing.

Receipts are at the house but I'd say about $250 so far on basic preventative maintenance.

Now the fun part (ordered and on the way):

Sonoran Steel 1.2A Lift Kit plus extras $1500 shipped
Bud Built skid package $620 shipped
Shrockworks bolt on rock sliders $440 shipped
Roof rack $0 (gift)
Taco LBJ, OTREs, ITREs and every OEM piece of suspension hardware $400 shipped

$8830 of my original $10k budget to build a nice wheeler has been spent, and I haven't even gotten to wheels/tires and powdercoating all these pretty new parts, let alone the bumpers and winch I planned on....

So basically my $10k build is now a $12-13k build but hey, if I wanted to do it cheap I would have bought a Jeep like everyone else.

All joking aside when I am done with this I have no doubt my 'runner will be with me a long, long time and be worth everything I'm spending (until I replace it as a DD years from now and it gets a straight axle, 35s and lives exclusively in the woods of New England) :lookout:

1997 4runner with 144k miles clean title
>>$3300
Headgasket >>$120
Resurface left head >>$200
Brand new right head >>$530
Water pump timing kit >>$320
Manifold gasket kit >>$150
OME lift >>$700
Camburg control arms >>$500
Tires >>$700

Total so far $6500

Way more than I want to admit.

$8300 purchase in January '09.
$1200 donor transmission and install.
$1000 stereo stuff (still mostly sitting on the shelf, waiting for install time).
$780 for tires.
$600 for new suspension (slight lift).
$200 for new radiator and trans cooler.
$500 for new steering rack and LBJs.
$120 for new cat-back exhaust that's already rusting out.
$1,000 for other normal and odd-ball maintenance.

No idea on the cost of fuel...don't want to know! :-)

So that's what, $13,700? Not terrible, I guess. It's paid off, so it's cheaper than anything new!

Paid $5500 for my '99 SR5 with 150k about 6 months ago. Excellent condition aside from a dent in the front bumper. Have a brand new one but I've just been too lazy to install it yet.

$500 over dealer invoice in June of 1999 (somewhere I have a copy of the invoice) for a 4WD/SR5. Think the only option on it was a rear heater (which they all had).

$40,000: purchase price - lets call it that with interest.
$2,000: sound system and Dynamat
$200: on my third battery
$450: water pump, timing belt, pulleys, replacement belts, etc.
$0: still on my original brakes, radiator, alternator, etc.
$0: never been in an accident or had to do a body repair (knock on wood)
$600: just did my 20th oil change at roughly $20 each + $200 in misc. other fluids
$600: a set of 265/70R16 Michelins from Costco (on second set of tires)
$15,000: for gas; at 95,000 miles, figuring an average of $3/gallon and 19MPG
$3,000: licensing, registration, smog, etc. (total SWAG).
$6,500: Insurance (another SWAG - figuring $500/year)
$1,000: other crap like a new antenna, paint (for chips), SG2, and whatever I can't remember. Although this is probably high; I can't even remember having to change a light bulb in this thing.

*******
$69,350 is the total; so like $.73/mile. Less, if you figure it still has residual value. It could have been a lot less per mile if I actually drove more. Pretty amazing, though to think of it as a total like that. I never would have expected it to add up so high. I still think of it as not bad.

Just got mine a couple of weeks ago and it's going on the road this weekend (well officially legally on the road. I may or may not have taken it on a few spins)

$3000 for the truck
$650 for winter wheels and tires
$500 on: Brake calipers and lines, a rear window rail. Fuel filter, air filter, oil filter, washer pump and various other bits and pieces.

So I'm just over 4G so far on a 97 SR5 V6 MT elock. 295K kms.

I still need a new set of summer tires and then it's all upgrades from there. New springs and shocks are likely on the list as the first major purchase.

Two years ago I paid $2000 for my '96 Runner, since then:
- $100 2 Ball joints
- $220 optima battery
- $140 plugs, wires, cap & rotor
- $165 filler neck & fuel filter
- $160 fuel pump
- $50 brake pads
- $50 another ball joint
- $60 exhaust pipe
- $55 thrush muffler
- $86 another fuel pump
- $26 another fuel filter
- $700 31" tires (4)
- $86 sway bar link & rear shock
- $20 transfer case seal
- $50 another sway bar link
Total to date: $3968 (not including oil changes and a couple brake lines)

$4500, planning on fixing a few minor cosmetic things and getting some nice seat covers with seat heaters. I've had it less than a week so nothing on repairs or upgrades.

I'm $13000 into it.
1998 sr5 with locker, supercharger, water/meth, 4" lift, 275/70r18's, built heads, exhaust, exterior doodads, alarm/remote start, upgraded brakes.. etc etc.
not terrible, but maybe I shoulda bought a supra...

Last year, bought my 2000 4Runner 4WD SR5 Highlander with 130K miles on it, all maintenance had been done by the book, with records. I paid $7200.

I replaced:

- ball joints/OTREs - $400 total including install price
- A/C & heat motor resistor - $21
- radiator & aux tranny cooler install - $160

So call it $7800 total, and I've had no problems at all. :)
