Not to worry - I won't be going far.

I'll be moving up one forum to the 4th gen section as soon as I find a nice one (this weekend, I hope!)

I've been considering a V8 AWD 4th gen when the time comes to replace the wife's Legacy wagon (I really miss the roll down rear window, lol), but that's a few years off still. They are also very nice trucks, you'll love it I'm sure.

Mine is actually just a Protege, not a Protege 5 (my signature actually says "Protege 5 Speed", I guess I should insert a comma in there....)

I wish it was a Protege 5 (the little 5 door wagon) as I really prefer wagons to sedans.

Still I can't complain about a fun little car that cost me $900 and gets 33+ MPG.

I keep going back and forth on the V6/V8 thing. The V8 is an awesome engine, no doubt, but I wish it didn't have full time 4wd. There's also the maintenance cost of a t-belt equipped engine.

Interesting to note that most of the V8's I see for sale are right at 85,000 - 95,000 miles - you can't help but wonder if people are selling them so they don't have to do the T-belt. The V6 has a chain.

Called my local independent Toyota shop and their quote for a T-belt on a 4.7 was $535 if they just do the belt or about $1050 if they do the water pump, pulleys, tensioners, etc.

Farewell! I too am thinking of selling my 99 for a 04 in about a year. My mom might take over my 4runner. She never took care of her runner and now she's having problems after problems. Good luck on finding a gem.

I wouldn't assume that a timing chain is a fail safe feature. They do stretch and occasionally break. The real kicker here is that generally if Toyota uses a chain it is an interference engine meaning if it does actually let go you will be replacing valves. Probably something the first owner would never need to worry about, but if you plan to hit the high mileage club like most of the 3rd gens seem to I would plan on at least inspecting it once and a while to make sure it is still in spec.

If the 4th gen came with a 5 speed manual, I'd be shopping for one right now. In the meantime I plan on sticking with my v6 5-speed until I go camping and a tree falls on it

I have a couple of friends with 4th gens.

Those with v6s wish to varying degrees and from time to time that they would have bought a v8.

How many with v8s wish they would have bought a 4th gen with a v6? Not one.
