Driving down the VFW Parkway (if anyone knows of this) and rear-ended this chevy colorado after he swerved and slammed on his brakes to avoid someone changing lanes in front of him.

What do you guys think, totaled? It's still drivable although i think the radiator will need to be replaced. I don't know if it is cracked because I wasn't leaking anything and it didn't overheat on my way home, but it looked like it may have taken some damage.

Truck has 218,000 on it and I had planned on driving it until I couldn't anymore, which looks like it may be coming sooner than I had hoped. Timing belt/water pump are in need as it has been 125,000 since last done but everything else is almost immaculate. No rust, body is almost perfect, wheels in tough shape.

I would keep it if the frame is ok. Aftermarket bumper and radiator and your good.

Radiator $125

In the costs, I factored in the price of paint.


So your looking @ around 2k in repairs (that might be a bit optimistic)

I would make sure that they inspect the frame alignment carefully. If it is at all tweeked they may just hand you a bigger settlement check.

If you have an auto trans I'd keep an eye on your trans fluid in case the built in cooler got ruptured.

If your truck is a 2000 millennium silver, then I should have a standard hood (non scoop) and a front grill for sale soon. You could just bolt them on.

Don't be surprised if the insurance company attempts to total it out.
Easy to fix, as long as the frame is ok(Which it should be.)

I doubt you will end up in a total-loss situation. It really depends on your insurance company. As long as the frame isn't damaged you should be fine. The only thing I would be worried about is the radiator support, they are pretty thin on these trucks and quite easily damaged beyond repair.

If the radiator is tweaked, the support is probably tweaked or bent as well. Being that it's bent in the center though, you may just be able to shape it back into place so you don't have to cut and weld a new one on. Depending on your amount of tools and expertise in bodywork, however, it could be a hassle and a half getting things bent back into shape and getting new parts to fit back together correctly.

Do you have full coverage insurance on your runner?

I'm pretty sure, upon first look, that the center support bar bent backwards in the middle towards the radiator. That's where i'm not sure of the extent of damage but I know its hitting the radiator.

I already found a 2000 bumper on craiglist luckily, I'm going to call in the morning to see if its still there, just needs to be painted.

Just by judging your pics, I think your radiator and AC condenser is still good. Your truck has the long bumper, so less damage to the truck.

Your frame should be good as it is not in that region. I'll fix all these. Perhaps hood later if cash is an issue at this time of the year.

Keep your DISTANCE! and eyes on the front car's stop lights. Don't worry about the road as your truck has enough ground clearance!

hey beffore you go out and start buying parts you need to look at the support structure to these bits, buying a new bumper may not be worth it at this point... when i got clipped by a bus it ruined some of the mounts for the lower valance and the bumper it's self, in the end it was much much cheaper to chop all of that stuff off and just throw an arb on there....

with all of this stuff, the cheap bits are going to be the things you can see and know, the expensive stuff is going to be the structure that all of this stuff bolts on to, the rad support if damaged is going to require some welding or at the very least a few hours of body work.


i would imagine your frame is fine though the end caps might be fubar'd , which you typically cut off and reinforce anyways with a arb type bumper.

seriously, i would inspect all supports body/frame metal before spending a dime on replacement parts...

insurance called today, totaled it before even opening or accounting for the hood. I need a radiator and A/C condenser along with the front bumber, grille, and hood.

They said I will absolutely be able to buy back since the only frame damage is the front end caps, they just have not given me a price yet.

which is exactly the route I plan on going. Insurance guy felt real bad going over how expensive these repairs would be before ending the conversation with, "it is simply because these things are built like absolute rocks".

This will be a good time as any to do timing belt/water pump and then I will do just that, drive it into the ground
