I'm tempted to pick this up... as I really like these Toyota pickups just like these... Someone else on here (can't think of the name) has a really really nicely built red one.

Just wanted to share with you guys and talk about it a bit... for sale locally (local = few hours/a ways ).

1982 Toyota pickup solid axel 4x4 the clutch is going out in it bought it for 2000 like to sell for 1500 has sunroof and I have put 2 new tires on the front. 83,334 miles.

I can't really afford it, already got too many vehicles and I need to keep what I have for college... One of you guys should pick it up, the guy is very flexible on the price, he really wants to sell.

In Louisiana, maybe... here in Colorado, hell no... there is NOTHING worse than the 25mph uphill assaults those older motors offer... plus, absolute rust buckets. That seamed bed design BEGS to rust, hard, even in the dryest of climates. Also the tiny cab made even me claustrophobic, especially if you keep anything bigger than the tire tool pack behind the seat.
That being said, the solid axle offers a lot of room for cheap upgrades, and the short bed really does make for a great offroad vehicle, if you have the $$$ and mechanical inclination! You could well have yourself a bulletproof setup if you invest... one other thing: my buddy and I went to the woods once, he had 2 gas cans, one for white kerosene, the other for gas... after 20 beers or so he accidentally put ALL 5 gallons of the white kerosene into the gas tank. We drove around for like 10 miles that day, came back and that is when he realized his mistake. That sonofa***** ran on white kerosene for like the next three days no problem, and he still has that effing truck. Runs fine.

Thanks for the thoughts, thor... I'm not going after this one at all because it looks sketchy in the picture... and if I got one, it would be more of a toy/project, and not my DD. But that's more for another life with unlimited money and time and other stuff. That said, the older Toyotas (including the 3rd gens) are just solid, build well. That's pretty cool about the kerosene!

And yeah, I live in similar terrain. Would be hard to DD this.

Honestly, if I had a garage or a driveway, I would SNATCH that for 1k. Just not a great fit for Colorado is all. I have been seeing 91+ 22re's in great condition going for 3k, much more power, a better fit for this great state, but lacking the build options for the front end. I knew a gal in St. louis that used to buy these all the time, fix/upgrade them, then sell them for a huge profit to South America drugrunners, they LOVED these for running through the valleys down there... no I do not condone that, just saying these trucks have a very real potential for offroading. Oh and Taliban love them too, have seen them on many a documentary!

i have an older one, not sure if it was mine that you are referring too, but i would suggest getting one with a 22r/re, i have a 22re, its got a 20r cam, slightly bigger vales and freed up exhaust K&N... thats about it for power mods. but even with the solid front axle and the extra cab i can still pull 20mpg, and i dont have any power issues... i will climb hills doing 60 all day long...





i do recomend getting a solid axle truck, as well as an extra cab one, and a 5spd is a must... so if you get all of that, efi, extra cab, solid axle, 5spd, you end up with a rather "rare" truck and it will be a 1985.

while yes the beds do tend to rust, there are things that can be done to prevent that, one is KEEP THE DAMN THING CLEAN!, and put a spray in bedliner in it... i have pulled all the inside bed panels and sprayed rubberized undercoating in there to prevent any rust, and then i also did this with the under side of the fender wells and under the bed all along the seams, i have 260k miles on that truck an only one small spot of rust. that truck will out last my 4runner hands down without a doubt. i have more faith in that truck and its reliability and ability than i do in my 4runner -too bad those ****s had to go and steel
my winch off it.


ps that second pic is with 2yrd of gravel in the back, the truck handled it like a champ...

Thanks for all the info the_kid! SUPER COOL truck, I wasn't referring to yours, but yours is just as awesome. I really like the first picture especially, so sorry to hear about the winch. I'll have to write down all this info and keep in it mind for when I look at these rigs more seriously for a project, wayy off into the future.

How does your wife let you have two awesome rigs at once? I worry that if I have another truck, that's gonna spell trouble down the road or something lol.

mines a EFI truck actually. im running 33s and dont have an issue... i think the issue comes when guys start messing with the motor and the electronics/sensors and trying to make big power out of them or doing little things they think will help like headers, big exhausts/strait pipes and big valves and hot cams ect. and dont do things right... they go too big on the valves and exhaust and end up hurting the trucks... these motors can run forever, take a beating and keep going, but when they do and people dont fix them, or fail to keep up on maintenance thats when they suffer. and when one is "sick" they do not make good power at all. i see so many of these trucks around with a CEL, and the owners/drivers are all "oh yeah that thing, its been like that for years... never died on me though... ", ive even heard one guy say "ive never seen one that didnt have the light on..." -i proceaded to show him mine and he just said "oh thats just because you pulled the bulb out". -i proceeded to smoke both rear tires and leave like 40' of black marks with my 33s, and he couldnt even get his 31s to brake lose... look if the CEL is on in one of these trucks its got a problem, you need to fix it. once you do and its running good it will make good power(for what it is -an older 4cyl). but dont let a CEL scare you away from one, most of the time its a pretty simple fix, the hard part is finding parts for these trucks, the are becoming more and more scarce -i regret selling my twin truck, the white one.

bottom line is these trucks are great little trucks. yes they are underpowered by todays standards, but your comparing a truck that is almost 30years old and has probably close to a quarter million miles to a new tacoma or frontier ... please be real

troth be told its actually her truck, she had it before we met -its been in the family for a while... she has talked about selling it a couple of times, and every time she does i she gets a restraining order on me lol jk, but yeah for the amount of $$$ we would get out of it we couldnt buy anything that could do what it does. or run as good as it does. i wont let her sell it, and she knows it. i sold my truck, my first truck, the one i had sense high school to put money in the "family fund" to pay for needs and practical things ect, and i dont let her forget it either lol. thats my ground to stand on when she thinks about selling this truck.

ps we also have a 94 4runner sitting on the side of the house that is my project, its gonna be a family wheeler/crawler. we bought it for $250 and have already sold enough parts off it to not be in the truck anything so she doesn't complain about that one either -actually it was her idea to keep that one and build it up... i guess i am pretty lucky to have a wife who is so understanding and accepting. not to mention her dad is a master tech for toyota and a wealth of knowledge -especially on the older trucks. when i found this out i knew i had to keep her :trophy:
