SoCal BS and Rant Thread

Shane, want to run Pancake with some FJ's on the 25th of this month

Possibly, depends on if I get all my maintenance done by then.

And speaking of maintenance, I won't be able to make the Superstition trip :moping:

I ended up having to replace my steering rack, and I still have to get it aligned. And I've been running my rear driveshaft dry for so long since one of the zerks sheered off that I think I might have messed it up. I have to get another zerk on there and throw some grease in it to see if it will be ok. And, I have a persistent clunk/rattle/sounds-like-the-wheel-is-going-to-fall-off sound coming from my right front. I might have blown out a coilover, I don't know lol. I can't pin it down, everything looks to be on nice and tight, so I'll have the shop take a look at that when they do the alignment. Maintenance sucks!

idk man remember my 16"s wouldnt fit but i have 3.5 backspace.

Yours wouldn't fit because of how deep the dimples were on the rim. Not a diameter issue. Looking at mine it looks like I could maybe drop down to 15". Looks like I have an extra inch of room diameter wise to give up.

4x4runner2002 Broker where you guys headed to?

Were going to go play w some long travel tacomas for the weekend. Find some wreak spots in my rear suspension to give me motivation to swap rear axles.

oh ya you are correct i remember now. i really want a set of those scs 3.5 wheels now. would be nice to shave 50 pounds or so ahah

edit would be 62 pounds. shit i better save up and switch thats a good amount of weight.

Shane it could be your LCA bushings. Guys in the 5th gen section are getting similar noise. One member had someone role forward slowly then hit the brakes. He noticed the LCA moved. He stated it makes sound during braking and making left turns. Hope this helps. Btw was it hard to change out your steering rack? My 3rd gen has a slow leak and needs replacing soon. Any tips and tricks?

So I might be out for superstition too... I'm actually replacing my steering rack as we speak. I started at 3:30. It's now 5:45 and I just pulled the old one out... Not a fun job, not a clean job. But it isn't exactly a hard job either. It's already pitch black right now though, so I have to ask my parents if I can ditch school tomorrow to finish the job... Otherwise I'm out for superstition

I do think I need new LCA bushings, but that is a different clunk that I get haha. I think I actually solved this persistent one. My rear driveshaft has a sheared off zerk, and it had run itself dry, and when it moved it wasn't a smooth expansion/contraction at all. I manually put some lube around there and I haven't heard the clunk since, so fingers crossed that it solved that particular problem.

As far as the steering rack, I probably wouldn't be a good one to ask. My front diff was out when I did it, so I had a lot more access. The only tip I have is pay attention to which way you take the mounts off. The one on the passenger side only goes on one way (maybe the drivers side too, I don't know), because one side is a bit longer, and it will make it seem like the bolt is just free spinning if you put it on the wrong way again. So mark which way is up to help you out with that.

Nice! You need to get a good work light. I actually have one if you want to borrow it and bust it out tonight?

I might possibly be back in for Superstition too, but probably just a day trip since funds are low now that I had to unexpectedly do my steering rack. I just dropped mine off at the Truck Shop for an alignment, so if I go or not will depend on when they get it back to me.

I think I'll save my gas money for the Pancake trip next week. I'm going to finish up the steering rack tomorrow. I might run in to you at the Truck shop actually because I'll be dropping mine off some time tomorrow.

Pancake would be a great place to test your diff :D

I'm back to definitely not making it to Superstition this weekend. I have to do some work over the weekend, and have a puppy that just had cataract surgery that needs eye drops 8 times a day, and to do it properly would take about 5 people, but we have to make due with 2 lol.

Definitely take some pictures though!
