Socal Professionals

Hey everyone.. :yo:
I'm a database analyst at Mattel.
But mostly; I collect toys all around my desk/cubicle area.

After second thought... maybe I don't necessarily belong in the "Professional" category. hah.

I still say take any good job and move out completely on your own if possible.

Waiting too long will damage your prospects.

We are all different kinds of people. I moved out 2 weeks after my 18th birthday via the Navy. Family trama? Needed to get out of there? Not at all. I just wanted to go out on my own. Soon I was on the other side of the country, family 1000s miles away. It was great experience for me. We could talk on the phone. I really didn't think about it much.

Anyways the reason I suggested expanding your reach is because it just may be required.

Btw, if you want someone to look over your resume I'll be glad to give blunt but constructive feedback.

If you can get a job far away there is nothing that says you can't move back after you've got the experience that you want.

Plus that way there isn't a large gap in your resume that makes employers wonder what's wrong with you.

Ya I completely get what you guys are saying, and value your input. I completely understand I could return to Ca if I leave for awhile, and get the industry experience I need. Let me clarify, besides local openings, I've applied to multiple locations across the country for Boeing, Northrop, Space X, Tesla, Ford, Honda, Toyota, other automotive companies, JnJ, Alcoa, and multiple construction companies. These were all entry-level 1/2 and could provide "relocation assistance", however I think here lies the problem.

For HR purposes I'm sure they put "relocation assistance available" to not exclude anyone. But that is one of the first things they look at, is if someone is local or not. For someone with a couple years of industry experience and achievements to support their work, a business is more willing to "make an investment" in that individual to hire and relocate them. Currently, I'm not seeing that type of excitement and response from businesses to put that same investment into entry-level positions. Not that is isn't happening, but I'm sure internally it's harder for them to justify hiring someone from Ca and relocate to Florida, than looking a little longer and find someone already on the east coast, resulting in a lower initial investment on their part, because unfortunately everyones just looking out for their own bottom line. It also doesn't help with the looming elections, as I've heard quite a few companies are in hiring freezes because they are waiting to get a forecast of what gov contracts will come their way.

I heard on KNX yesterday that the city of LA will loose somewhere around 40 thousand employees in the next 3 years, all retirees.

They will close/consolidate some jobs but there will still be an abundance of jobs available. Just wanted to through that out there.

Oh ya haha, I've been checking public works sites too. A friend of mine started in June for City of LA. She's a civil engineer, and is apart of a group that focuses on all city street lights. She's been able to give me a heads on a mechanical engineer opening that I've applied for. I also had a friend just get start at SoCal Gas in August and gave me a heads up of an opening I've applied for and also forwarded my resume to the guy that interviewed him. My aunt works at LBPD and gets emails of city openings, so I'll also regularly check that website, and she gives me a heads up if she hears stuff.

I've got a good network of friends and we let each other know about leads, upcoming job fairs etc. I've also been looking into some biotech type of companies. I know 4 people who've gotten hired as Process Engineer's there in the last 6-8 months.
DannyLlama I'll check out their site, thanks!

lovestrucks Interested in biotech? I have a bachelors in eng from Harvey Mudd with a mechanical focus, but got into biomedical engineering and love my multidisciplinary field. Send me your resume/a pm and we can chat if you're interested.

Hi everyone,

Pretty new to the group. I work in animation on a show with a talking baby and a drunk dog. I live just outside of downtown LA.

Sounds hilarious, link?

You know...these two guys.

Broadcom isn't the place to be these days, unfortunately. They're in the midst of being acquired by Avago Technolgies. The CEO of Avago, Hock Tan, is a modern day Gordon Gecko. Their plans for Broadcom post-acquisition are right out in the open: They will find $700M+ worth of "synergy" between the two companies. "Synergy" means the same thing as "massive layoffs are coming".

Avago acquired Emulex in Costa Mesa last year. There are plenty of ex-Emulex people out there who can tell you how that went.

I get that but a job for 6 months is a better than no job for 6 months :)
