SOcalTrail's 2011 Trail Edition Beast Build Thread

Well, another dirty day of welding, cutting and grinding. Until you build one of these you will not understand why it takes fabricatiors like Bud and Shrockworks so long to introduce these kinds of products to the market. I am making a one-off model but if I had to build it like those guys do and build jigs, templates, weld fixtures, etc. it would take at least twice as long!!!

Today I got the welds all ground with nice radii, finished some fit up issues, skip welded all the inside seams for extra strength, gave it a light sand and wipe down and sprayed it with some self etching primer. I keep saying it but so far I'm tickled with how its turing out. I played around with how the OEM bumper cover is gonna integrate... looks great so far. I have some trim pieces to cut and bend next week. Also got the spindle for the tire carrier marked up and positioned on the bumper.

This build is insane, props for doing all the machining and fabricating yourself. Can't wait to see how the rear bumper comes out
 
Never really been a fan of the 5th Gen. But after seeing yours, I'm almost convinced it will be my next vehicle. :bigok:

Thanks man. I came from a 3rd Gen and was honestly not a fan of the 5th Gen T4R's when they came out. They definitely grew on me. I'm a T4R fan for life.... that is until Toyota decides to make it a unibody truck....
 
Wheels

I am sure this already has been addressed, but being new to this forum, I figured I had a good enough excuse to ask this again.
How did you get your wheels done? Were they painted? Were they powder coated? Did you just get a can of Krylon? Any input would be helpful. I just bought my Trail and want to color the wheels, but I want to go about it the most durable and cost efficient way.

Ha. Well. This is a SOcalTrail trade secret.

I have had many sets of wheels in the past... quite a few were powder coated. I mainly painted these because I had great luck with it on my 2001 T4R. The paint held up great and when they do get scratched up from wheeling, I wipe em off with alcohol, sand out the scratches and touch em up. They look good as new. It cost next to nothing and takes hardly any time. Some people scoff at the idea but it really is great. If I did spend the money and have them powder coated I would be pretty bummed seeing as how my wheels have come in direct contact with some nasty rocks out in the desert a few times now.

When I was young I would always see my dad reading the latest issue of Hemmings Motor News and using the weekend to work on his latest VW that he would fix then sell only to buy another and repeat and I would always wonder what he saw in it. well I am now almost 42 and after reading this thread as well as some others I now see what the deal is.. this thread is pure porn for us car nuts.
