SOcalTrail's 2011 Trail Edition Beast Build Thread

Howdy guys-

Thought I would drop a line on my build thread for anyone interested.

I'm selling my Rigid light setup on the front of my Gobi rack - they are four Rigid SR 6" LED light bars - the middle two are spot beam, the outer two are "combo beam" and they are angled out about 10 degrees or so. The bracket mounts to the top of the Gobi Stealth rack, its made out of .100" galvanized sheet metal, primed and painted with a textured finish to match the Gobi. All the lights are pre wired so you just have to run one power and ground up to them and they are set.

If anyone is interested, shoot me a PM.

I have some daytime pics of the lights and braket I can throw on here later...

Thanks! I took a 2 week break from working on it to play in the desert, now the work begins again!

Thanks!

I was happy with how the Vision X mount came out. It was a very tight fit,you could say it was like trying to fit 11 lbs of chit in a 10 lb bag. I did fab the grill as well.

I'll hafta see where if I still have the water jet program that I made to cut out the sheet metal for the light mount.

Well if you ever decide to make another light mount, I'd be interested. Your set-up is by far my favorite location for some add'l off-road lights. BTW- Titus Canyon looked like a ton of fun!

Now that you've mentioned this, I'm waiting to see what the replacement set up will be! :hungry:

I'm thinking he is thinking either SR40 or E series 40??

Close, but the replacement will be about double the luminous output of the SR40... it will be a surprise!

So I've spent the last month playing around and enjoying the fruits of my labor on my rig. It has been in the dirt every weekend for the last 6 weeks and performed absolutely perfectly in a wide variety of terrain, from mountains of east San Diego, to the deserts of Arizona.

I took a slight break from finishing the bumper since it seemed like I was spending every single weekend working on the truck and got a little burned out, so some fun was in order.

I'm back in action now, ready to perform the 35k maintenance this weekend, wire up my rack mounted alley lights (6" Rigid SR floods) and start on my new switch panel, I started to mock up the rest of the bumper including the swing out and the trim pieces, and have the final dimensions of the aux. fuel tank drawn up, and have the material cut and ready to bend. Its just a matter of time as I have quite a bit to knock out in the next few months.

Here are a couple pics for grins:

Updates to come as I start getting work done again!

Can you still fit the spare underneath the truck with your bumper?

I cut out all that crap for the stock spare and an aux fuel tank (~14 gals) is going in place of it. I'm mounting the spare on a swing out similar to what the other rear bumper builds use. For now, I just throw the spare on the Gobi rack, awfully convenient and out of the way. I kind if like it up there.

I like it up there too. I was just asking because hofs05 will eventually want a rear bumper but she hates the tire swing outs.

I am boycotting this thread till I see a completed bumper...

You have become very complacent since your big T4R of the month win.

Lock it up:roadkill:

Still boycotting this thread... You brought this upon yourself... A little less enjoying your truck on weekends and a little more welding. :whip2:

Just got the truck all loaded up, 5 days in Death Valley 4 Wheeling!!!! Lots and lots of pics to come.

In the mean time, here are some updated pics on some stuff I've been up to.

Cheers!

More pics to come Monday night when I get back.

Love the rig amazing build but I have one suggestion. These bolts on the rear bumper will sheer off if you slide down on a rock. Ive seen somewhere of course cant remember where now. But I know there is a little what looks like a washer with lifted sides. The idea is if you slide down a rock the washer will lift the rock up and over the bold head instead of hitting the side and sheering it off. //____\\ that is a very crude drawing of what im talking about. Again I love the rig keep up the great work.

HAHA, sorry brother! Been too tied up having fun. Been a busy last couple months! Had a great deer hunt and took two nice animals for the freezer, got engaged, and training for a marathon! I have 2 weeks coming up and you can bet your bottom dollar I will be knocking out some serious work on the truck :)

Well, someone else mentioned that and it was something I took into consideration when I designed the bumper. I used all grade 8 or metric 10.9 bolts throughout the whole build and have yet to have even the slightest issue. The bottom of my Shrockworks skids are built the same way and have had no issue with them at all. I have absolutely ran the crap outta this truck in the last year, every type of terrain you can imagine including some nasty, nasty rock crawling and had no issues. It would take an act of God to shear off one of those bolt heads, worse case I can forsee is a bolt head getting mangled in which case I replace it with a shiny new one, if I want. I appreciate the constructive suggestion though, if I ever have a problem I will definitely head the route you suggested.

Here are some pics of some stuff we crossed in Death Valley. I have since been through even worse, waaaaay worse over in some trips to Arizona.

New to the site, wandered over from mud to get some info on 5th gen T4R's. Sick build thread! I like the hood mod you did, what 3m product did you use and where did you get it. I think I'll practice on my FJ before trying something like this on the new vehicle.

Thanks Keith

Hey Keith,

Sorry for the late response, I used 3M Scotchprint 1080 Matte Dark Grey Metallic Vinyl. I picked up a 4'x5' sheet on Ebay for around $75. Its been on for quite a while now and its holding up great, the glare reduction is nice too.

Bumper / Tire Carrier Update

I got the spindle mounted, the swing out, and the latch assy. all buttoned up yesterday. All that's left is to mount the tire and the hi-lift which I have already drawn up, just waiting on more 2"x2"x.25" tubing to finish the project. After that I have to make the trim pieces to cover the corners and send it all off for powder coating! It is all VERY VERY BURLY!!!. I weigh 190 lbs and can bounce around on the swing out with it in the extended position with no bending or bad stuff going on. When in the latched position, the Bear Jaw latch is backed up by a .375" SS Pull pin rated at 20,000 LB shear strength and the downward weight rests on a piece of machined delrin. No weight exerted on the latch when its closed, very trick. Everything is plated, used all .375" steel and .75" steel to mount the components, all waterjet cut.

Here are the pics, lots of nice TIG welding here!
