This is the first I've heard of the truck "shifting" out of control under hard breaking at speed -- I've not done this so it's something I've yet to experience.

This is the first I've heard of the truck "shifting" out of control under hard breaking at speed -- I've not done this so it's something I've yet to experience.
Are you swerving wildly while braking? Never had an issue with my limited and the xreas improved on the road driving quite a bit compared to my Tacoma.
We recently rented a wrangler for a week and drove a couple long stretches of dirt road and thought we were going to loose a set of teeth. My wife swore we would never rent another one. The suspension and seats were horrific there is just no comparison to a 4runner.

Well there ya go, theres the problem. See I drink coffee, shave, play on my iPad, read a book, trim my nose hairs, text, tie my shoe, etc etc while I drive. I bet that may have something to do with it now that you mention it... Perhaps.

I bought mine because the wife said... "buy me that one... And get the windows tinted. Maybe yall are better at negotiating with the wife than I. Incidentally I pulled out a f250 that was stuck down in matagorda on the beach, so it must be ok off road. Also, I have driven it accross the pastures at the farm @60 towing logs behind it with a chain and it didn't blow any struts or motor mounts... However I did bend one of the safety chain mounting eyes. LEMON!!! Still nose dives like a mother though! People need to lighten up on the Internet. Not everyone drives slow and careful, not everyone drives like a bat out of hell. Some people think off road prowess is important. Some don't. To each their own, don't try and press your beliefs on others... Let them find out you were right or wrong on their own! That's all I have to say about that.

My 4'11" wife thinks our TE handles like a dream- and we live out in the country where the two lane county roads twist and turn, and the deer require that you are ever ready with the brake pedal. She especially likes the considerable vertical adjustment of the power driver's seat.
Agreed. I've cut through the Appalachian mountains around 3 dozen times visiting my folks and I find the truck somewhat fun on that type of road (and this is coming from someone who previously had an '07 GTI and '01 Impreza and currently has an '05 MCS). Once you get in tune with the suspension and weight transfer, it is a pretty entertaining vehicle to drive.
The brake dive is what it is (soft springs, top heavy vehicle = nose dive... basic physics). The braking performance is excellent, though. The vehicle comes to a stop in a hurry when I've had deer running out in front of me.
Here is the route I regularly drive in my 4Runner, BTW. Had a blast driving up by myself a few weeks ago since my wife with unborn child wasn't with me to complain about driving too fast. :cheers:

I have been one of the biggest critic's of this vehicle. I hated this vehicle from day ONE. I currently have a 96 4Runner and a 2011 4wd Limited The lack of performance and front in noise dive problem is drying me crazy to sell. It's acutally going to be traded on on a 2013 BMW M3.
I do enjoy the ride quality and nice leather, and chairs. It's very comfortable.

Sell a 4runner to buy an M3? Are you sure you don't hate the 4runner cause it was not what you wanted/needed and realized you made a mistake
Regarding what a few have said, I didn't drive it aggressively enough on the test drives to expose what I think are a few of the handling issues are. I also wondered if a limited would have been better in retrospect, but we decided to go in a different direction. I think that it's a great truck for some, but not to use as a mall cruiser.

My 2012 LE is my first 4Runner , my three previous vehicles were GMC Sierra's none of which where better in the corners as my LE, all 3 of my trucks pushed in the corners due the the heavy front end compared to the light rear end. IMHO and this is ONLY based on my past vehicles, the LE is MUCH better in the corners as my trucks, very little lean angle and when I bedded in my brakes I was surprised at the amount the front did not dive, although the brakes did give up near the end of my bedding in period.
Now if we go back to the two vehicles I had before my GMC's, that's a different story, I had two Mustang Saleen's, total different kettle of fish but still you can't expect to get everything you want out of one vehicle.
Me as I get older I find my wants and needs tend to change as my vehicles have as well.
Regardless of what you think,I applaud the OP for not bashing on the 4 runner as bad as he could have, and I hope he finds a car more suiting to his needs.

I've got an '03 Limited with XREAS. I think the OP has a valid point. My '03 handles pretty well, for a truck. It rides pretty well, for a truck. It stops pretty well, for a truck. But I never forget it is a 4600 lb, body-on-frame, solid-rear-axle truck. I put up with that because I take it offroad.
If you don't take it offroad or tow, a crossover, minivan, or station wagon may well be the better choice. And among 2-row crossovers, the Lexus RX is one of the best.

I've had my SR5 for 18 months so I've gotten used to the brakes but I still don't like them. My son-in-law was looking for a new vehicle so I let him test drive mine. The brakes killed his fascination with the 4Runner. IMO the worst issue is the constant wandering while on the freeway. The increased attentiveness required to keep the vehicle centered in lane is tiring. My wife's CR-V provides a more relaxing drive. Sooooo I am thinking of trading for a 13 Mustang GT or Boss 302. Why you ask? Because I want a muscle car for once in my life AND if Obama gets reflected we will all be driving golf carts by 2016.
