Solved: FJ Cruiser Spring Lift for 3rd Gen 4Runners

Just installed FJ coils paired with some KYB Gas-A-Just all around over the weekend. Couldn't be more happier :thumb3: (coming from stock 220k miles coils lol)

Upon reading some of the same install setup, I find my rear lift not netting as much as other people. As of right now it sits leveled - however, I plan on installing a roof rack (Garvin Industries wilderness rack) and a rear bike mount with 2-3 bikes. Plus camping gear of course.

I'm concerned with all that weight that I will net a rear sag. I don't mind a slight/moderate rake unloaded, fact is I like it :boxer:

Not sure what options I have with the FJ coils for extra rear lift.

Suggestions?

What shocks are you running in the rear? I plan to run the tundras Billy's up front but unsure one the rear. The stocks are pretty worn out. Did you switch from KYB's to Bilsteins?


Also...Thanks to the OP for the writeup. FJ springs are on their way. This should be the right amount of lift I want/need.

Has anyone run this with moog springs? Was looking around for oems and found a bunch available for cheap, wasn't sure if it was worth it or not.

I only did the front with FJ springs, and they are not OEM. I did not use MOOG because I hear that they are total garbage. I used ACDelco springs, which I trust a bit more because it's owned by GM, so they are in a sense OEM quality. I have them on Tundra 5100s at the 2nd clip position.

Rear has used OME 890 coils and KYB Gas-a-just shocks for a '96 Land Cruiser.

I haven't gotten to drive it yet, but it has to be better than before since it had a rear spring that was literally rusted in half.

Okay suspension gurus. A local guy has an 08 FJ and I can buy the springs for all four corners with Firestone airbags in the rear and Bilstein 5100 in the front. Will this work for a small lift for my 97 Limited? I can get the whole lot for $150. Or should I just buy the springs?

If you can get the whole thing for $150, I'd go for it! However, if the 5100s for the front are FOR the FJ, then you will not be able to use them, but you could probably sell them for $100-ish. Small lift should be achieved and if you can use the airbags, then definitely use them.

Airbags are from the FJ, but in the springs already. Will they work?
The 5100's are for the FJ front, so I'll have to sell.

I installed 4runner KYBs - BUT - if I were to do it again, I would probably install some inexpensive upgrades like Bilsteins.

My review for this setup:

- Fronts are too stiff with KYB (maybe better with Bilsteins). The coils are rated for heavier weight so it might perform better with some weight up-front like tube bumpers
- This is somewhat a 1.5" in lift/leveling kit (my truck sits almost leveled). If you plan on loading the truck, I suggest some trim packers for the rear for an extra .5" lift
- Ride is much better than stock (then again, I've forgotten what a new/refreshed stock suspension feels like lol)

Overall, this is a decent replacement to OEM suspension. Gives you a small lift for the fire trails and for mall crawling. I'm able to fully load up the truck and no reverse rake is visible. Suspension rides better with a decent load - keep some sandbags in there lol

Yes, they will fit. both front and rear. The 5th gen 4Runner coil springs are similar to the FJC and to the 4th gen 4Runner coil springs. However, the front shocks will not fit. The rear shocks will fit IF your 3rd gen 4Runner has at least 3.75" of lift at the back

However, the amount of lift will be on a trial and error basis at this time as there are several options and complete documentation is not yet available.

Will 5th gen front springs and coils fit on a 3rd gen? And if so would they met any lift? I have looked and can't find any info on this!

I have driven it around just a bit, maybe 15 miles, and it handles good enough. However, I have never driven a T4R with stock suspension that worked. Literally my only experience is with the uber clapped-out garbage that was in this one before I swapped it. But it is a 1000x improvement over that stuff, so I'm happy.

I know that's not a very great verdict, but it goes down the road comfortably, so I'm happy.

I just finished this set up after reading and searching the best option for myself. Purchased 4 FJ 4wd springs front and back from 07-10, billstein part #24-188265 for rear & heavier duty 00 4runner rear shock. Lets just say my ride is absolutely horrible. Don't know if a different part was shipped or what, but the front is 1 /34 higher than the rear and it rides like a log wagon. Don't know what I'm going to do to fix but I've got to do something!
