Well crap, that sucks then. I wonder how they choose the VINs for the recall.
I am currently on the phone with the above number. My 4runner is not bad as far as rust is concerned but I figured I would call. Supposedly they only go back 15 years so mine is not i included due to being over the 15 year mark. I am currently being transferred to a specialist to see what they can do for me because there is a certain set of vins under that 15 year mark that are supposedly being recalled for the runners and since mine is outside of that, she wanted to see if there is anything they can do for me. Take it for what its worth as this is just what I was told on this call.
Update: Just got off with the specialist and she didnt know anything about it. She said there is nothing for the 4runner at this point?!?! I am skeptical however to believe anything she had to say as she kept calling it a "fordrunner". Yes, you read that right.
Maybe some other people can call and get more info. Either way, mine is not included even if there is something going on.

I have an 01 which is at the 13 year mark. So I don't think the year has much to do with it. I'm going to call and see what I can find out. Most likely it's nothing, but it's still worth the try.

I just spent 45 minutes on the phone and there is NO recall on these. I called the above number and talked to someone there, and they told me there was no recall for the 3rd Gen's in his system. He then transferred me to Toyota's US headquarters to find out more. I talked to another person there for about 15 more minutes. He also there is NO recall currently going on for our gen. He also said there is NO campaign in place for frame rust issues. All they can do is take your information and contact you if a campaign or recall does come along.
So, at this point there is NOTHING going on. Or, there is a recall and not a single person involved with Toyota knows about it.

I am glad I jumped to the end of the thread. Bummed it is not true though it seemed almost too good to be true.
Still happy with the 1999 Limited I just bought with 122k on it. There is rust on some of the undercarriage, but nothing major. Pretty happy with my purchase after selling my 2006 Sport (worst decision of my car buying life)

Not sure either. That's why I told you to call that number to find out for sure. The guy on the phone may have thought you meant a Tacoma. When I talked to the dealer, and the two people from Toyota. They all said the same thing, "did you mean Tacoma or Tundra not 4runner". They have to run your VIN to see any recalls in the first place. Different models, even though the same year do have different recalls. An 02 Limited might have a recall, while an 02 Sport does not.
